i have a 1988 i6 4x4.just bought it for 350.00
anyway, when i first bought it, the fuel guage was on "E" .so i stopped and put 10.00 in the front tank and it said about a quarter tank.never thought anything about it and drove home.we heard on tv that gas prices were expected to jump, so i went to the closest gas station and filled both tanks. ive been driving the truck for a week now and the guage reads full for both the front and rear tank. i havent switched to the back tank yet , still running on the front. i did switch to the rear tank to see what the guage said and its still full.
i know im about to run out on the front tank, but why is it still saying its full?
when i switch to the rear tank the guage doesnt even move, stays way above full.ive already checked the connections behind the cluster and they seem to be clean and look ok.anyone know why the guage doesnt move? especially when i switch to the rear tank?i know its still full.
That area trucks are notorious for sticky floats after time. Run one tank out, switch tanks, fill the first and run the other out. Just make sure you always have a full tank!!!! Use your trip odometer as a gas guage. Welcome to your new truck, a lot of us deal with the same thing everyday!
Do a search on this site for dual fuel tanks and you'll see plenty of folks with the same issue.
There are ways to check for the problem, but usually the answer comes back to a short somewhere or a bad sending unit in one or both of the tanks. This usually requires pulling the bed to reach them or dropping the tanks, wqhich you should opnly do when they get completely empty.
Seems to me that when they read full, you have a dead short in the wires. But do a search and look through the repsonses to find one that describes the exact issue you have. You'll find wiring diagrams & other tips.
Good luck - this site will be yor best friend. My son has a 91 too.
I have a similar problem with mine. Both tanks, when full, will peg my fuel gauge past full and it will stay there until about a half a tank then it drops quickly after that. I use the trip odometer as a gas gauge for now, getting about 185 to 200 miles per tank. I'm guessing a ground problem or bad sending units but I haven't gotten that far to check it out yet. This seems to be a VERY common issue on these trucks.
I had same problem but turned out was sensor. I put it in and it diddn't work . I had hooked it up same as before. Well someone esle had hooked it up wrong. Well at least it came off easly the second time
