6.0 intercooler

I am thinking of installing a 6.0 intecooler in my 2001 crew. What all do I need and is it worth the cost and work to od this mod?

I just bought my 6.0 intercooler from ebay today for 147.50 shipped. I did alot of reading on this before i decided to get one. You will need new boots that will adapt to the cooler. Several of the sponsors carry these boots. Jtharvey said that he noticed a drop of 75-100 degrees in his egt. For the price, since aftermarket intercoolers which will drop egts 100 to 150 degrees cost $1100 or more, they are a great deal for the money.

This is from a thread that I asked the same question about several months ago:

The inlet is smaller on the new intercooler, same size 3" as the intercooler tubes. The outlet is the same size as the original.

The inlet and outlet are also an inch shorter so we needed to fill this gap and figure out the size problem.

The solution was simple. you need 2 napa intercooler hoses Part number 1701 and 1740 and 2 extra clamps

Cut off 2.5 inches of the oultet pipe near the intercooler, passenger side of the truck, save this short piece. attactch the 1701 hose on the shortened intercooler pipe, attatch the 2.5 inch piece you cut off to connect the new hose from NAPA to the stock blue hose. This blue hose fits on the new intercooler. you use the new NAPA hose to add 1/2 to 1 inch of length. Cutting the pipe and reconnecting it with a 1/2 inch or so gap gives you the extra lenght you need.

On the other side the NAPA hose 1740 adds the extra length needed.

Thighten it all up! put the other parts back in place!

also http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/air sells tubes and boots that make the swap really easy and quick so you might check them out, it cost a little more than the napa boots. I guess it just comes down to how much money you want to spend to make is easier.

ive noticed something. those with the stock 7.3 intercoolers with plastic tanks shouldnt need those boots. you had the stock aluminum-tanked intercoolers, right?

this is from their site-

Intercooler to tube connection transition hose.
3"x 3.25"ID x 8" long. This hose is often used to install a stock Ford 6.0L intercooler into the 99-2003 Powerstrokes with 7.3L engines. It is also used for 2002 and 2003 7.3L stock intercooler with plastic tanks and Ford part# 2C34 6K775AA. You may want to measure your connections before ordering. Part#0H104
$28.50

i have noticed on my hot side boot, one end is larger than the other, so i think i may be good.

That's about it. The EGT drop is about the only thing you'll see with a stoc 6.0 IC swap. Now, going with some aftermarket coolers, like the Spearco I have now, you'll see the turbo spool up quicker and an even bigger EGT drop.

Thanks strokin. That's what it looks like after i read your post and took a look. I should have my intercooler this week. Won it yesterday of ebay so i will post back on how the install goes. I don't need any parts then right? The 6.0 should swap right out with my 7.3 then from what i read. Thanks again.

So unless you are boosting it to high EGTs regularly, is there any advantage to doing it? Jody Tipton thought that it might be worth it if you could get it really cheap. Forgot how much he said it was worth. IOW, how much should it cost before it isn't worth it? TIA

I got mine brand new for 150 shipped from ebay. Jtharvey said the egts drop about 75-100 degrees. That seemed worth it to me since an after market one starts at 1100 and i would rather spend the other 1000 dollars on something else. I figure i got a cheap drop and egts.

True. However, does the EGT matter anyways if you are hardly hitting it at 1200?

Maybe not but i thought of it as a little extra security for a small price. Just my opinion.
