Right now I have an 05 expedition and I'm looking to add a FORD factory dvd player to the truck. I have a Alpine head unit now in the truck and I'm wondering what problems if any will happen if I try to add a factor dvd unit to the truck?
Also does anyone know where I can find the factory harness, or factory support brace for the DVD unit?
Sorry I need the charcoal (grey) color, otherwise I would gladly have taken you up on your offer. Now if you want to part the support or the wiring harness I would also be glad to take those off of your hands
Dont have them. We have an 05 and purchased this head unit off of ebay. Problem is the wiring harness and mount are almost impossible to get. I was told the mount you can only get from Ford with the purchase of the factory DVD player. The best bet would find one out of a junk yard. I was searching for the wiring harness (junk yard) when the wife said she rather have the headrest version so you can see out of the rear view mirror better. The mount I was going to fabricate and weld up my own out of metal. So Im stuck with a head unit that will power on and play dvd's as i checked it out. If I cant sell it I have the wiring diagram on what each pin is and will be installing it in my F250.
I also called the company that does all the ford radios, speakers and navigation for ford in Orlando, as the service techs no longer work on them at the dealerships. They said they will not install a ford factory DVD player. To expensive and with the wiring harness, maybe head unit and DVD/Mount combo from Ford its not cost effective.
1) The gray DVD player would only be available in an 03-06 XLT or 05-06 Limited with gray interior. In my experience, at least in the used market, most Expys with DVD players have tan interior (all EB's for those years only came with tan interior for example). You may have a hard time finding a gray DVD player, seems like a needle in a haystack.
2) Not sure if the factory DVD player can work without the factory head unit. The wire harness for the factory DVD player has power, enable/disable control, and rear control panel/dual play integration with the head unit. Without that I don't know how you could enable the DVD player at all. You might find someone with direct experience with this but my hunch is you can't do it.
You already have an aftermarket head unit, why not look for an aftermarket DVD player? If the HU you have supports an integrated DVD you could be all set. On the other hand, if it doesn't, then you would have to use an FM modulator for any DVD player, even if you could find a factory one and get it to work. You may be better off looking for an aftermarket head unit/DVD combo.
I guess the reason that I wanted the factory dvd unit is because I wanted to have the kids in the back listening to the dvd player, and me and my wife in the front listening to my IPOD through the HU? I don't know of any aftermarket DVD's that have this ability.
Also my expy doesn't have a the rear controls for air or sounds, so I don't know, maybe I'm a little ahead of myself.
Most of the aftermarket units can be set to where the kids listen to the DVD through the headsets and you can listen to your music through the radio. Since there FM modulated all you do is turn that off at the DVD unit.
The unit were having installed is the DVD will go in the arm rest and the headrests will have the screens. The screens have built in IR for the wireless headphones. There is a setting where we can turn on the FM modulator for sound through the Speakers. 100% of the time the people in the back will be watching the screens so no need for us to hear what there listening to up front. Only reason you would need through the Speakers is if there are people in the rear seats. I was told we can add up to 6 headsets though.
So I would not even worry about the factory unit and the installation of the aftermarket ones is done differently then the factory one. I have read a few of the install instructions and allot are telling you to mount a piece of wood to the roof support then screw the dvd into the wood.
