Idle setting

Hey folks, I have a 460 with a new 770 holley street avenger and a 560 lift, 242 duration cam. How do I get my idle high enough to accommodate the cam without bypassing my idle circuits? I have drilled 1/8 holes in my primaries (per the Holley book), and this has helped alot. The idle seems to low still. I am idling at around 1000 rpm.

If there is a stop/idle screw for the secondaries, make up the extra you need there.

1000rpm is kinda high, how high do you want it to idle?

I have tried the secondary adjustment and it didn't help. I thought 1000 rpm was high but if I go lower it stalls.

Sounds like it is running too lean. I would richen up the idle circuit if possible. Is it an auto trans? Does it idle lower out of gear? If 242 Duration is at .050, then you you have a very large camshaft and it will have to idle pretty fast. If 242 is the advertised duration, then I would say either the idle mixture screws are not out far enough or you have a vacuum leak.

The duration is at .50 and it is an auto. I have checked for vacuum leaks and it seems to be okay. I have been told that the 770 Holley is to small and I need an 850 with the possibility of jetting it down. I just bought the 770, so I am not ready yet to try to purchase another carb, plus I dont know that this will help my problem. I am also running out of fuel at hard acceleration. I have a new Holley mechanical pump and a Holley Red label at the tank. It doesn't seem to happen when I have the electric pump feeding the mechanicla. I would have thought that the Holley mechanical would be enough.

You should be running 1/2" line from the tank forward with that setup, that might be why you need the electric pump.

Plus, you are drawing thru the electric pump which is a restriction.
242@.050 is huge. Very low vacuum signal.
How big of a stall converter do you have? Will it idle in gear when at 1000rpm in neutral?
Is the initial timing high enough?

Thank you for the help...It idles best at around 1150, the torque converter is not adequate or possibly even stock. When I put it in gear it drops down to around 950 and I have to nurse it. If I bump the timing up too far I get piston knock. The timing is another beast I am working on. I have got it pretty close (major distributor issues). If I can keep the engine temp down along with finding a plug one step colder, I think I will have that close to corrected. None of the local parts houses can seem to tell me the next colder plug. If it is not in there book by vehicle applicationn then they dont seem to know.

IIRC, Autolite 23 is the coldest, 24 is mid range and stock for D0VE heads, and the 25 is stock for later trucks with the 460.
I wouldn't even try a stock distributor in that engine, go for a custom curved DUI unit, or have a speed shop curve your for you. Either way, give them your specs, and they will build a unit to work with your engine.

Thanks, I am running Autolite 45's now. I will change to the 23 or 24's and give that a try.
