How do I remove the gearshift from the tranny? Here's a pic.
It looks like there is a pin right below the "ball" or where the gearshift goes into the tranny. Then there is quite a few bolts at the top of the tranny case. Do I need to even remove the gearshift to get the tranny out of the truck?
P.S. there are a few more pics on my website (pic in my sig is a link)
Have a 65 F100 with a T18 tranny. On mine, there is a cap that threads onto the neck of the tranny at the shifting lever. On mine, unscrew the cap and underneath is a pin that slides out releasing the shifting lever. It makes removing tranny easier if shift lever is removed, probably do not have to tell ya, that tranny aint light weight. For information purposes, there is a 6 part article in the 'article/spec' forum on T18 rebuild.
Glad you posted this, I was just getting ready to ask the same question. I believe mine is the same as in the picture, it doesn't have the cap that screws off, just what looks like the pins.
I have carpet covering my transmission tunnel and was hoping not to have to remove it to drop the tranny. Is a T18 the same as a Granny 4 speed?
Thanks, Matt

I had carpet in mine this morning, it may have lead to all the rust underneath, along with the leaking door seals. It rained last night and if you look at the pics on my website (click on link in sig) you'll see all the wet rust.
I'm not sure if mine is a T18 or not, I didn't have anything to unscrew either. I'll try to get a clearer picture of that pin after I get the pressure sprayer after it tomorrow.
Have the shop manual for the 65 F100 and if the tranny is the 435 fours speed, makes mention of "disconnecting the parking brake lever from its linkage, and remove the gear shift housing". Not clear, to me, what the gear shift housing consist of. Hopefully, member with 435 tranny can advise.
I actually thought that mine is a NP435? don't remember the numbers. I looked at my door tag and it has 'trans' = 'N' for whatever that means. I looked it up on this site http://f100fever.topcities.com/specs6166.html and it doesn't correspond to some of the data that is on the door tag.
Crap, if I disconnect my parking brake, I think my neighbor across the street is going to be mad at me. My HOA keeps giving me crap about have an abandoned vehicle, so I removed the wheel chocks and set the parking brake. I think that even with the engine in the garage, she still weighs enough to a little damage to neighbor's property.
Borgwarner T18 and NP435 are both wide ratio 4 speeds with a 'granny low' gear and 3 normal ratio. Basically have a 3 speed and I rarely use the first gear 'granny' unless starting off, up steep grade with a heavy load.
I took my housing off, but I cant seem to lift it high enough without removing the tranny cover. The shifter forks extend way down into the tranny. It has new carpet and padding in it and the floors are fine, but may just have to remove it to get the cover off and check it out.

Try removing it this way:
Make sure the transmission is in neutral. This isn't necessary, but it is helpful.
Push down hard on the steel cap in the center of the tower. It is the cap the shift lever goes through. It may help to push down on the lever itself as well.
Once you get it to go down (it is spring-loaded) rotate it counter lockwise about 1/8 turn. (That is, unscrew it.)
It will pop up.
When you are done, be sure to test that the transmission can shift into all 4 forward gears and neutral because installation can be a bit tricky.
When you re-install, ensure the transmission is in neutral, by lining the fork shift slots up all in one line.
Insert the shift lever straight down, and keep it centered in the fork slots while you push and twist the cap back down.
Note that the shift lever can be installed even if the forks are not in neutral.
If this happens and you don't have the forks in neutral when you insert the shift lever, you won't be able to shift into neutral. You will only be able to use 1 - 2 or 3 - 4.
The fix is simple, just remove the shift lever, re-align the forks, and try again.
Anybody want a free tranny? I am replacing mine with an auto. If someone was interested in picking it up, they could have it. Works fine except for the 3rd to 4th synchro, needs to be double clutched to go into gear.
