Well folks, need you advice again.Yesterday I was cruising in third (three on the tree) and came to a stop and she was stuck in 3rd. I got under the hood and jiggled the linkage and got it freed up. Got home and pumped half a tube worth of grease into the steering column fitting, as it looked like it wasn't done on a while.then fingered some grease on all the outside linkage.Seems to be ok now.My question is: is this common on the three on the tree...locking up? And did it because it was somewhat dry but not completely. Is it a sign of wear and should I replace the linkage( doesn't look like an easy job as it seemed to be hung up in side the column. Thanks as always,
Don: You did the best first thing, lubricating the linkage. There are several possibilites here, and more than one can aggravate all the others - if that makes any sense in writing!
Mark was correct in diagnosing the bushings a the primary culprits. Easy (sort of, considering where they are) to change, and not real expensive.
2. Worn or loose link pins or levers where the linkage mounts to the tranny.
3. Worn shifter or gears inside the tranny.
4. Incorrect clutch adjustment - more than likely not, but it doesn"t hurt to check
5. Worn shifter bushings in the upper or lower part of the steeering column - not fun at all.
Hell, just drive it. Old Fords stuck in traffic with the hood up are works of art! Besides it may never hang again and if it does you can fix it quicker next time. Check the level of the gear lube in the trans.
