i just bought a new 2007 ranger sport 2wd 4.0L engine and i was wondering if there were any uprgrades i could do to the engine that would give me a significant boost in horsepower thats relatively inexpensive. also, it seems that the engine has a governer on it that cuts fuel intake at 95mph. i was wondering if there was a way to increase the shut off speed because the rpms are still in the low 2000s when im at 95. thanks for you help.

This is just my own personal opinion here, but if I just spent ~$20,000 on a sparkling new vehicle, I wouldn't modify it period. That's just me though. Were I to modify a vehicle it would be one that I owned (i.e. didn't own money on and/or wasn't under warranty) and therefore could always trade it in if I messed it up too badly.
If you're itching to do it though, you might check out one of the guys here in the forum that pitches those chip upgrades, sounds like a very good way to squeeze out whatever Ford locked up.
You sure you want to void a portion of your warranty? On top of that, FoMoCo seems to be getting pretty finicky about looking for ways "out" of warranty work when the vehicle owner has screwed with it. So on that note, a fartcan muffler might be reason for them to void a bit more than just the warranty on the exhaust system. And you the consumer are standing there fighting with them while they have all the leverage and you have nothing. There was a thread in GCA on this general subject here in the last week. At any rate, something to think about.
When I first got my 05 ranger edge 4.0 I just left it stock and was very cautious to any modification. It does seem pretty dumb to fix up an already nice truck, but every man wants his power. It only took me 6 months before I modded my truck a little bit. I eventually changed to sythetic motor oil and put a drop-in K&N filter (which I can highly reccomend for your truck). I also put a Flowmaster 40 series. Best thing ever, not really for power, but sound. It makes your engine breathe a little better, but HP gains noticeable in an overall by other bolt-ons. For a tuner, I highly reccomend a Bama Tuner. best bang for the buck, full customizeable, just check it out. It just plugs in your OBDII port under your steering wheel and there you have it. You have 3 programs to choose from and you can even re-flash your ECM to stock settings. The dealer will not notice a thing, plus you can use it to read error codes to easily diagnose a problem yourself. $400 well worth.
My final decision on my truck is not much more mods, I'm going to buy another older ranger for beating up and real off-roading.
By the way, the Governor is a good idea for tucks and you truck specifically. I know how it feels when you want to at least break the 100 point but 95 is more than fast. Tires are rated to take certain speeds and stock ranger tires are not meant for high speed, let alone the truck itself. More things can go wrong at those speeds and if you ask me I'd keep it that way. Most tuners can take that limiter off, but you're just asking for something stupid to happen. I'm glad I have my governor, otherwise I probably would go faster, which would only get me tickets.
Why man make vehicles go 120-140+ mph on highways with a speed limit of 65mph?
I too added a Flowmaster 40 series muffler and started with a K&N drop in which I have since replaced with the K&N FIPK intake kit. I just ordered my Bama tuner from Doug day before yesterday and can't wait to get it. It will remove or raise the speed limiter but I have to say (and makes me feel old considering I used to hate to drive at speeds under 100) but the speed limiter is a good idea. The Ranger is a great truck, but lets not have the false impression that it is a sports car designed to handle those kind of speeds. Its not very aerodynamic nor does it have the tires/suspension or brakes for those kind of speeds. Also changed from my stock 31x10.50x15 BFGs to 32x11.50x15 BFGs.

Let me know how the Bama Chip goes, I am really thinking about getting one too!!!

Will do, I've heard so many good things about Doug and the tuner on every Ranger forum I've been on that I have been wanting one for a year now, just didn't want to spend the money but I finally broke down and ordered one.
I think I will do the same when I get the spare money. I think your review will lean me even more towards buying it sooner. I'm sure you will be pleased, haven't heard anything bad. good cost to benefit ratio.
thanks for all your input guys. i wasnt going to jump right in and start going crazy on it. i will gradually start modifying it and was just looking for some ideas. thanks again
