i checked the bands and clutches with air and they worked fine, i could see the bands engage and disengage and could hear the clutches thump, no leaking air either. put the modded valve body in and the 1st to 2nd shift is very firm but the 2nd to 3rd shift flares up and then there is a very firm shift but takes half a second in between 2nd and 3rd. I shifted manually too, cause i still need to get the modulator right. modulator only matters when the tranny is in drive?

Install the longest pin.
Recheck the band adjustment.
If you have fine thread adjuster screws the adjustment changes.

ok i adjusted the bands, they were way out. 10 ft-lbs on both and back reverse out 3 turns and intermediate 4 turns. The pin that is in the modulator is longest it will take, i tried using a longer one "1/8 inch longer" by cutting up a clothes hanger but when i put the modulater in, it would almost go all the way but would feel spongy the last 1/8 of it. I also obtained a 400 psi oil pressure gauge and hooked that up. while holding the brakes i went through the gears and here's what i got

1st 100
2nd 100
drive 70
nuetral 60
reverse 130 but was 170 when cold

at full throttle 1st and 2nd jumped to 200 and when it hit third it droped to 120

i noticed a better engage in reverse and less time between 2nd and 3rd but still flares up and shifts very early with part throttle but shifts at 4500 at full throttle

A little spongy is ok.
If you back the small screw off the spongy should go away or lessen.
Then you fine tune it.
Are the adjuster screws coarse or fine thread?

4 Turns back on a coarse thread is too much.

Even if it is fine thread I don't care for it.

Turn it in 1 full turn and try that.

yes they are fine thread and i'll go put the longer pin in the modulator right now. what if i get the bands too tight, will it wear them out extra fast? will i be able to tell if there to tight?

ok, i tried it one full turn and it wouldn't move in reverse or manual 1st so i guess i got it adjust as tight as i can get it without burning it up. couldn't do the modulator yet cause it gets messy and i had other plans.
