raced my 7.3 lifted with hypertech programmer exhaust and intake vs. a stock 6.0 excursion and it was neck and neck until 65 and the 7.3 started to pull away.
how much hp (estimate) would the 7.3 have with straight pipes and intake and a programmer ?
Do a tranny valve body upgrade and you'll not only have quicker shifts (less heat/wear) but you'll also start walking him earlier... Once the TC locks up is when you really start hustling!
yes the 7.3 had the chip (mine) and its my brothers 6.0 with nothing - bone stock and 33" bfg m/t's ... my truck was on performance which is said to be 110 hp...
That’s disappointing because I’ve been looking at similar mods for mine. Based on everything I’ve heard (or read on this forum) I would expect a MAJOR impact on performance from your mods. Will someone please reassure me that spending a couple thousand dollars on mods will do more than put me neck to neck with a 6L

Well, for starters some mods do more than others. It just depends on how much you want to spend. From what I've been reading lately, Jody and DP tuner make the best chip out there for the 7.3 diesel. You'll pay a premium price for it, but users that have them sing the praises of Jody and DP everytime they drive. Pipes are pipes and they'll allow your engine to breathe better, you just have to decide how much you want to spend and how big you want to go. MBRP makes one of the best and most cost effective stainless systems on the market, so if you're looking for a system, it's a great place to start. As far as intakes are concerned, the AFE stage II with the PROguard 7 (or it's successor) or the Ford AIS are the best options as far as getting air into your engine and not dusting it. If you don't plan on upgrading the transmission itself or torque converter, you can get a shift kit from a number of manufacturers that will firm up your shifts as well as, keep things cool and efficient. Last but not least, guages. They're cheap insurance, 'nuff said. With a setup like this, you could easily give a stock or slightly modded 6.0 a run for it's money. However ; the 6.0 does have a few things that gives it an advantage: the VVT, 5-speed auto transmission, more power stock than a 7.3, and a few other techinical things. But depeding on what you do, you can either be evenly matched or superior. It just depends on how much you want to spend, you will always pay to play. Do some reading and check out some of our sponsors. They'll give you a shove in the right direction. Take care.
I agree - i thought i was going to beat the 6L by atleast a few car lengths but no, just a few yards but then again that was only to about 75 - and i was just starting to pull away
I was a little upset but then again i love the sound and reliability of my 7.3
FToreador_Diesel let me say WOW. I think that’s one of the most straight forward rundowns of suggested mods I’ve seen yet. Since discovering this forum I’ve found dozens of things I’d like to do to my X, but the sheer number of options makes it all overwhelming and difficult to sort through the options (particularly since I’ve found very few side by side comparisons). I don’t have any problem with paying to play but as you pointed out not all mods are created equal and I really want to maximize the bang for my buck. So, thanks for the advice. One quick question… Jody and DP tuner???

Thanks, what good is knowledge if you don't share it?
I'm not sure of any affiliation between Jody Tipton and DP Tuner, but I know that Jody knows the 7.3 and 4R100 probably better than the people that made and designed it. When he makes a tune for a 7.3, you'll wonder how ever you did without it. I don't have any contact info for him or DP Tuner, but I'll look and post the info if I find it.

There is an affiliation between them. Jody IS DP-Tuner.
