Holy low oil batman!@

Took my truck down to the local lube joint to get oil changed and radiator flush. I'm going out of town soon and didn't have space to do it myself (garage packed full of junk). Anyway, long story short.

1. No oil on dipstick. Truck runs fine, no funny noises (thank god).
2. Crappy oil filter installed at dealer where truck was purchased.
3. Lots of oil on the outside of the filter itself.

The guy said that was a junk filter, as the seal was just crappy, (practically nonexistant). And that the filter was *BARELY* hand tight. He said it's probably why my oil was so low. it's not burning it, I'm thinking it's not using it, as it runs great.

Sound true? Anything to look out for? I'm going to keep an eye on the level every couple of days for the next 3 to 6K miles and keep on an eye on the oil filter itself, making sure it doesn't 'rattle' loose or something.

If you had lost a bunch of oil it would have been sprayed all over your under carriage. Sounds like it was loose enough to only weep out. Be thankful, if she ain't knocking or burning oil you are OK.

No knocking squeaky or funny noises. Just took her our for a half an hour freeway speeds, runs fine. So I think I lucked out hardcore.

The odd thing is, I never saw any spots when parked. Is it possible that it only leaked while under pressure? Or is it using it already at 100K miles?

I seem to burn a quart or more between oil changes. From what I've read, this is normal (on the 5.4 anyhow). So if you haven't changed your oil in an extended time, that may be the case as well. If she purrs along well and no noticeable issues, I really wouldn't sweat it. Just do yourself a favor and do your own oil changes....those sneaky repair shops will save every penny they can and use crap for replacement parts.

I watched them do it. They put pennzoil 5w30 and a pennzoil oil filter. Same thing I would've done on my own. That and change the radiator fluid but that's it.

Beyond that, I do all my own stuff. I would've done my own oil change, but I didn't have room in the garage. And I'm not laying in mud to change oil.. sorry. :P
