Living in the bay area but travel around quite a lot.
Tahoe, Reno, Sacramento, and all the surrounding areas...and all around the SF bay area....
I was just curious if any of you could recommend some good restaurants that we might not have tried or even heard of yet? Doesn't have to be fancy just really great grub!
here's some places I love:
The Stinking Rose ($$$) - for the Garlic lover!! San Francisco, CA Banana Leaf ($$) - Indonesian/ Malaysian- Milpitas, CA Aldaberto's ($) - Mexican- North Highlands, CA. (suburb of Sacramento) You have got to try their california burrito- AWESOME!! OB's Bar/ Restaurant ($) Truckee, CA - They have some pretty good chicken wings. HOT HOT HOT! and some great beers on tap. All pretty well priced!
There was a pub in Tahoe City that I can't remember the name of- And they have the best dang burgers I think I've ever had! maybe Bdox can help with this.
Val's in Hayward for milkshakes, burgers, and the best bacon you'd ever taste.
Early Dawn in Modesto for steaks, not open during remodel though.
Red Steer in Turlock for fresh meat sandwiches.
Cant remember too many others.
Funny you should mention OB's in Truckee...it was a family favorite when I lived in Tahoe as a kid.
Across the street (Columbus Ave.) in SF from the Stinking Rose is a great Italian trattoria called the Steps of Rome. Very authentic, all the folks there actually came from Italy.
The Broiler Steakhouse, in Redwood Valley (5 miles north of Ukiah on 101)
Excellent steaks, picture a broiled 2-inch thick filet mignon that melts in your mouth!
Jack's Grill, in Redding. Equally good steaks as the Broiler, maybe even a bit better. Been in the same location for over 50 years. Plan ahead and be prepared to wait anyway (they don't take reservations)...but it's worth it.
When traveling I-5 north, plan on being in Williams about lunchtime for Granzella's Deli. Great sandwiches and lots of other cool goodies. Their olive-tasting bar is to die for!
I may post others as I think of them, but these are some of my all-time favorites!
Ruggerios in Markleeville for some authentic Italian grub. Ruggerio's restaraunt is on his residential property and offers a nice deck dine under the pines during summer months. I don't eat there much as I am kind of cheap and would rather BBQ on my own deck, but have eaten there and found it a pleasant experience. A little spendy though. It's only open durning the summer months and folks come from all over to dine there. Then a 3 mile drive up to Grovers Hot Springs to soak after a nice meal is a must.
Enjoy!
I'll post some more of my favs later after I ponder on it.
Have you guys tried the Elephant Bar? Has many selections, all are good and price is right for a family thing.
Hamburger joint in Modesto MOAB by the college, not the one on Yosemite, used to be a great place.
Angelinos in Stockon, was better back in the day when they were in the "bad part of town", but still is a good feast now.
If you're going through Oakdale, stop at Faressi's Deli (folks working there are kind of ****, but dang good food.
Used to make a treat with the wife in Fremont, and go to Ninjo's (sp) Castle, off 880 near Chucky Cheese.
Up the bay off 101 and Harbor (near Redwood City), tucked back off the water is Pete's Harbor, definitely worth while to stop on your way to SF for lunch.
I might think of a few more later, but I'm getting hungry right now...ohh, the Hungry Hunter in San Jose off Blossom Hill...great place, order the mushroom stuffed New York...damn, now I have to go find that bag of Cheeto's the kids had out today....
Can we talk about cars now, I see a Cheeto/quesidilla/Dorito night coming on.
Try Taqueria La Bomba in Mountain View for lunch. Some of the best carnitas I've ever had. Try a #1 burrito or even the plate with refritos and all. Tastey.
I remembered a couple from my days working in the E. bay:
#1-Springtown golf course in Livermore.
#2-Cant remember the name, but it's pretty classy. It's in San Leandro on Marina. As far west as you can go on Marina, then it turns South into Monarch Bay DR. I think there's a golf course there too. Not that I play golf, but working for the phone Co., we know some good breakfast & lunch spots.
