I know this is a dumb question, but I was always told that dumb pertained to the one that wasn't asked.
This is on a 99 Ranger and using a 2 ton jack.
I had to change out one of the rotors and while I had everything apart I figured I would change out a bad ball joint. I can not for the life of me figure out where to place the jack(floor jack) so it won't hinder the placement of the jack stand under the shock bolt . Everywhere I put the jack its in the way of the jack stand What should have been a couple hour job has now taken the whole day and half the night . I have to get this finished as its the only running vehicle at the moment. If you have any ideas please share them. I don't feel safe with only the jack holding up the truck, and the shock bolt is the only stable place that isn't in the way of the press.
The frame was my first choice but I can't raise the truck high enough without a whole lot of 2x4's placed on top of it. Not a safe idea at the best of times. I need the lower control arm off the ground by a good 10 to 12 inches for the press to fit. It has to be used upside down as the ball joints are pressed in from the top. This means that the screw of the press is under the ball joint stud so its pressed up and out. Most I have seen and done are pressed out from the bottom. and theres no room to use a fork(tried that).
Only other thing I can suggest is maybe somewhere towards the center of the truck. I mean, you put the jack under the middle of vehicle in a secure spot (while facing the front end) and jack it up that way.
I ended up taking the wheels off the jack and placing the now flattened jack on 3 2x10's to raise it high enough to raise the center of the truck. I quickly placed the jack stands under the shock towers and lowered the jack so the truck was firmly resting on them. This is not the greatest idea by any stretch of the imagination but it solved my problem. Now to get this stubborned ball joint out and the new one in. Hopefully the others do not go out any time soon.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Sure would have helped in my case. The regular 2 ton 10 1/4 lift cap cheap jack works great for changing tires but sucks when it comes to the real challange. Whats bad it this is a stock truck....no lift no nothing except tires that are 235's, 1 size taller than the stock ones it came with. Sucks if ya get a flat on the front though cause the spares stock. Have 31's on the back so it sucks back there also. Well back to the battle of wills between me and the ball joint. Its stubborned but IT IS moving. Going to have to modify the press a bit as its bottomed out and I still have a ways to go.
