I have a 1979 F150 4wd. I have never been satisfied with the level of braking power. I have replaced everything including all of the lines calilpers and wheel cylinders, and proportioning valve. Everything has been replaced except the power booster. This truck shold slide the tires but it won't. I have a bled the lines many many times. But Performance has not improved. Any ideas?
Are there any high performance braking components that are available that are worth it?
You could try going with slotted rotors, and some extreme duty [fleet] pads.
Also, if you have phenolic pistons in your calipers, swapping them for stainless
ones can help the pedal feel more firm.
Then there is also kits available for a rear disc setup, if its still not enough.
I just had both rotors replaced, both calipers, and a new MC, all stock, and mine (79 F150 4x4 4 spd) will lock up no problem. Not the greatest braking system anyway, but you should not have that problem.
And also remember... vehicles nowadays have anti-lock brakes..... so they don't skid.... and actually slow the vehicle down without locking them up and driver losing control
the f350 booster swap will make a huge difference in braking power.
I second this suggestion. As an added bonus the F350 booster is smaller in diameter so it'll give you a little more valve cover clearance too.
If you REALLY want stopping power and feel like fiddling with it do a search for hydroboost. I did this on my truck and it will lock up 44's like there's nothing to it.
