All.... i have a question. My 01 f-250 diesel is leaking antifreeze out of the center front of the motor. I think it's the water pump. What it's like to replace one? How long do i have before it bites the dust? It leaks about 1 drop per 15 seconds or so. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jeff
I really need to learn how to link a url...anyway google powerstroke water pump and you will find step by step instructions. doing mine this weekend. I have read that once it starts to leak, it doesnt take long to fail totally.
mine was leaking so slowly that I only noticed it after my truck sat for a couple days. with the engine hot, it would evaporate before hitting the ground. I figured I just had to put a little more antifreeze in every month cuz it was so darn hot out. After it sat for 3 days I noticed a little puddle of antifreeze and saw some on the front of the motor- like you described. I bought a bottle of barsleak and put in. I have not had to add antifreeze since, and no more puddles after sitting for a few days.
When mine started leaking, I left the pressure cap loose on the degas bottle and the leaking stopped from the weep hole until I could change it on the weekend. Also, was a good time to install the coolant filter.
the water pump on my 01 let go about 1 year ago, no warning, didn't leak at all, just got a smell of hot anti-freeze and it spit every bit out within 1/2 mile. lucky it was still under warranty, Ford dealer put new pump on under warranty. check warranty on your truck, my in service date was Aug. 1 and my warranty just expired 2 weeks ago.
i guess i was lucky. i have priced a new water pump though for the future. Its $300 from Napa. Wonder how much it will be when I finally need to get it....

Hey Jeff, I've got a 1999 F350 with 118k miles & I just replaced the water pump 2 days ago. I too had smelled anti-frreze and could see occasional drip residue on the bottom radiator hose, but could never see the leak. I then shook the pump shaft sideways and noticed it had play, a clear sign of the pumps bearings failing. Not wanting to get stuck out on the road, I took it off and saw where the impeller was cuting into the interior wall of the pump. I bought a new pump from Ford ($264) after not liking what Discount Auto had to sell. While at it, I replaced the 2 main hoses, pump connections (metal flanges), thermostat and serpentine belt, all from Ford. Ford's hoses come with new pressure clamps.
To make the job easier, I removed the entire radiator for room to work. It took me about 4 hrs work time. Runs like a charm!! The hardest part was removing the clutch assembly. I had to use 2 pipe wrenches to unscrew the thing! Well good luck!!
the install is not too bad. it took me less than 2 hrs. i had a tough time with the clutch assembly as well. so i took it to the dealer and paid a shop guy 5 bucks to get it off for me. he took an airhammer to it and it came right off. i got my pump on ebay for aroun $130 been runnin like this for 2 months trouble free. good time to put in the 203* thermostat too.
I added bar's leak to mine, drove it about 150 miles and it still leaks!
Everytime I read about someone putting Bars Leaks in one of our high dollar cooling systems I am tempted to ask this question. Exactly what is it about your PSD is it that you don't like?
bars leaks is probably one of the worst things you can do to your truck by trying to fix something. it really decreases the efficiency of the cooling system. you know how it makes a barrier around the leaky area and makes a coating, right? well it makes that coating on the entire insides of the cooling system. so now with this coating all smeared around the cooling system, in the heads and cyldiners, the heat transfer will be less because the water cannot pass over the metal on the cooling jackets and absorb heat as easily.
It's a lot worse than that even. But not being my business, or my money y'all are going to be throwing away not too far down the road I am going toi leave it at that. I do recall being 16 years old with a 1947 Studebaker that I used it in once. Maybe that is what taught me the lesson???
