need a little help my low 4 will not engage at all 4 high works fine, its not the motor it may be the switch or the controll box behind the kicker pannel, i was wondering if there is a way to bypass the box or switch for low range, or if it would cause any problems if i were to put it on a toggel.
I looked into this on my old Bronco. The swich is a momentary contact swich that is wired to a control box with sensors. It seemed to difficult to me. (I know twelve volts, but I'm not in to electronics.) It turned out that my shift motor was bad.
No, there is no way to bypass it and you don't want to try because the system measures RPM of the components in question and verifies that eveything is aligned and its safe to do so without damaging the driveline. (Think of it as a fully electronic shift synchronizer). There are about four separate sensors in the T-case that send this info back to the shift control module behind the kick panel. If one of them is not functioning or "thinks" there is a problem the module will not shift into the selected range. 4LO requires nearly zero RPM on the input shaft of the T-case before it will engage. If you are dead certain the motor is not suspect, you can put the tranny in neutral, (SET THE BRAKE), and manually spin the motor armature until the 4LO range is engaged. This is a tedious process but it can be accomplished. This way if 4LO will engage manually, you know there is a problem with an internal sensor.
Personally, I got fed up with the unreliability of the electronic shift and swapped in a manual version of the T-case in my own.
ok crawled under the truck there are three wires hanging out of the t-case,( to the right of the motor) not connected to anything, looks as though they were ripped out of something, a really heavy guage as well, what could these be( there is no harness to hook them up to)? also there seems to be no way to manually turn the selector under the truck, the selector is covered and has some wires running into it as well

The three wires are brown, green, and blue, right??? The brown wire is the electromagnetic clutch feed (not sure what it does, I'm sure grey knows though) if I recall correctly and the blue and green go to sensors in the transfer case (or they are supposed to anyway). Those wires should go into the transfer case. As for getting them back in the right place, I don't have the slightest clue. Grey will be able to help much more than I can. But, as for not switching to a manual t-case, why not?? It should be a fairly simple job. Good luck
ya brown green and blue, they come out of the t-case next to the driveshaft, but there is no harness to the truck or shift motor to tie them into. So right now they are just hanging down, i think these are to the "speed sensor" inside the t-case but not sure, and if they are then they may be whats not letting the info get back to the controll box. i ran the selftest on the box and its fine, swapped switches (in dash) from mine to a bud's truck and it works fine, has to be these wires but i dont know where they go!!
There is a slot in the transfer case near the output shaft that they should go into. There is most likely a rubber piece in that slot where one of the wires should go in. And yes, that is most definitely the reason that your bronco won't go into 4 low. But, like I said, I don't know how you would go about getting those back in, except for disassembling the transfer case itself.
Check out the pics in my gallery. They show where the wires SHOULD be connected. I added the necessary steps of getting to the speed sensor to the "Description" of one of the pics in my gallery. Hope this will help. By the way, you will not need to do everything that is listed in the "Description". You should be able to tell which steps you will need to follow.

hye i got it working, thanks for the wire chart dallas, once i got an idea of where they go i was able to rewire the speed sensor and get it up and going again. Now for some good wheelin'. thanks for all the help guys especially dallas and greystreak....
now that the low range is working its time for me to get that lift and some new tires
FYI, the 4x4 control modual is an obsolite item according to Ford. Their cost to special order, $275.00. You can go after market for about $150.00. So far my after market has held up for 1 year. Good luck!
My 4x4 high will work also and I can here the motor kick in on the transfer case, but when I select the 4x4 Low button nothing happens
So if the motor is working on the High side....does this mean the switch is bad on the low side?
