Wheel Adapters

As previously posted my son bought a '91 Cougar XR7 with some very nice 16" wheels and tires. With all the other expenses I cannot afford to buy new wheels for our '65; however the existing wheels look very bad... I have found wheel adapters which convert bolt pattern spacing. The truck spacing seems to be about 5-3/8; however the catalog has 5" and 5-1/2" spacing. What is the bolt pattern on a '65 F100? Any idea for a '91 Cougar? The adapters are about 1" thick which I think will help with the backspacing problem. Thanks.

I used the search button and discovered the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2 spacing. Anybody have any luck with the wheel adapters? I think they cost about $40/pair which if they work might make it so I can use the 16" wheels and almost new tires from the donor car.

I have never used them but would advise you make sure that they are DOT approved. If they are than they should be safe. As long as you are not running any really big horse power.

I like my 16" they fill the wheel wells better on this body style truck.

I would avoid using the wheel adapters. Problems with wheels coming off, and front wheel bearing failures are common when adapters have been installed. Once the adapter is on you can't check to see if it is coming loose without removing the wheel. The added spacing puts all the load on the outer wheel bearing.

Just my opinion, but I would scour e-bay, and maybe find a cheap set of hubcaps, or you can find some decently priced wheels, 5 on 5 1/2 is a pretty popular bolt pattern and there are literally a gozillion out there. I would save the 80 bucks and put it to something that will last.

I appreciate the advice and will more than likely just stick with the old style I believe called 5 spoke wheels until I can upgrade the wheels/tires. Thanks!

Go to a local tire shop and ask if they have some used stock wheels. I bet they do and would sell you them for the price of the adapters.

The rear track width is narrower than the front on 65-72 F100's. Those wheels may not look right. You could sell the wheels and buy some nice 16 inch smoothies with more back spacing for the rear two and use the tires you have.

My parts truck had the spoke wheels. They have more character than my regular metal rims. I had them sand blasted and painted for $125. They look slick. Still saving up for tires to put on them now. With new crome lugs and center caps they will look good on my old ride. Might be an option to freshen up what you already have until you get that $800-$1000 for some nice rims/tires.
