A few weeks ago I installed a 4” Summit SS turbo back exhaust system. Last week I pulled my 4 wheelers and trailer on a trip, and was dismayed at the LOSS of power, and fuel mileage. On inclines that never slowed me down before I was lucky to get over them at 50 mph. Fuel mileage went from 18-19 down to 14-15, with the same load. Engine water temps would go up every time I hit a steep incline. Is this a result of the exhaust change? I have read looked though a lot of post, and I don’t find any post with this type of problem.
Yes I did. It had nothing to do with the 4" exhaust. The FAMOUS EGR valve went bad around the same time as I installed the exhuast. Took into the dealer and he had it fixed in a couple of hours.Runs great again. Funny, but the wires feel off of it right after it left the dealer lot.
ahunt could you tell me what you think of the summit exhaust, I was thinking of getting one for a 05 crew cab long bed 6.0. Is is a good fit, much louder? thanks
My EGR wires fell off too but after driving about 50 miles on the highway, I could smell exhaust gas in the cab. I always run the A/C on Max (especially when it's 106 degrees) so I shouldn't have been drawing in much outside air. As soon as I plugged it back in, the smell went away. I know I wasn't dreaming it but that's the only time I've ever had that smell in the cab with a PSD.

I was wondering what Ford said when they seen your turbo back exhaust. Did they repair the EGR valve for you with out alot of headaches? What year is your truck? I just installed a 4 in turbo back kit on my 2006 PSD in July. THANKS!
Yeah, I'd like to know about your exhaust too. Did you take the cat out, or leave it in? Also, did you have any clearance issues with the downpipe and intermediary contacting anything? Did you do this install yourself, or let someone else do it?
I put a Bully Dog 4" (turbo back) on this summer and had many, many, many, many.... issues. It was quite a deal to resolve the problem and Bully Dog was terrible to work with. How was your experiance?

I bought a off brand exhaust it was 3 1/2 in down pipe(apparently yours was a 4 indown pipe).I heard the fire wall needs some fab. A frend of mine helped especially with the down pipe to hold in place and hook back up to the turbo. I started out using the cat with this strait pipe kit that is 4 in after the cat. The only problem I had was the one pipe was too long (probably for a long bed). Easy fix with a sawsall. I looked at alot of kits on the web and chose mine due to cost and I guess you could say I lucked out. Total cost $330. Including the delete pipe for the cat that I just put on yesterday (had to cut some off the hanger on this pipe) but that was it. Wow the turbo really sings now!
The dealer was more concerned with the KN intake then he was with the exhuast. Said Ford blames the oil spray for them as creating issues with the turbo. The CEL never came on. The Summit exhuast is a 4" turbo back, with the CAT left intact. The sound is just a little louder then stock. Yes it was a bear to install. It is a 2 person job for the down pipe. The turbo down pipe is very snug, had to remove the engine hoist bracket, to get it in. After that it was a 30 minute job for the rest of it. I do enjoy the increased power it seems to have. Havent had a chance to check the milage on it yet. I have an 05 short bed extra cab, as of now it has 21,000 miles.
ahunt any pointers about that downtube install? Also did it have enough pipe for a long bed truck? Looks like a good deal for stainless. Any problems with the quality or fit? Appreciate your advise.
I put the MBRP Off-Road exhaust on my 05. It starts out 3.5" and changes to 4" before it makes the turn towards the rear. I struggled with the downpipe for a good while but that's mostly because I was doing it alone; not something I recommend. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because there didn't seem to be room for the downpipe. I just kept wiggling it around and finally hit the sweet spot where it fit like a glove. I left everything loose till it was all under the truck. I ended up putting a jack under the lower piece of the downpipe to hold it exactly where I wanted it while I tightened everything up.
Netfly, I would recomend having some help, it's not a 1 man job. The exhuast kit is desinged for a long bed a well, as I had to cut off 30" or so. The trick is to remove the rear engine hoist bracket,(hex head bolt). The system fit well and comes with fair instuctions. I had to modify 1 hanger for my truck. You can really hear the turbo sing out the exhaust now, but its not that much louder than stock.
Thanks for the info ahunt. I was originally looking for a cat back system cause I'm sure my dealer will give me grief if ANY problem arises that they can blame on it, like a bad wheel bearing. You know how those things are so closely related... Anyway maybe I'll just install it as cat back for now and do the downpipe later as I'll probably be doing the job alone. Time to add one more task to my to do list
