My current transmision just strated acting up yesterday it started to shift very slowly from o/d to 3rd. and the engine would rev up and clunk into third when i would step on it at 55 mph. and when i put it into reverse it gets all bound up and starts to shudder really bad, like the breaks are on full. I jacked up the rear end and messed with it and noticed that when i put it into neutral that it still drives like drive. I have no idea whats wrong with it..so im pulling the pan tonight to check for metal...im sure i will find some. any thoughts on this?99 F-150 S/C 4x4 off road, tow package, 4R70W tranny, 3.55LS rear end, Cold Air Kit, Flowmaster 50 series dual exaust.
Thats exactly what i was thinking... But we didnt find any black material in the pan. Just small fine metal flakes and a few small chunks....Is this a common problem with these trannys?
Hmmm, no clutch material? That's odd. I am sure the clutches are welded up. I have seen this problem regularly with AODs, less so with 4R70Ws but it does happen.
Did the fluid smell burnt?
Is it possible somebody changed the fluid already?
I changed the fluid about 30 thousand ago. Didnt smell burnt... i dunno.. found another 4r70w for 350 with 120,000 on it and my friend tells me that the truck looks to be all highway with no trailer hitch on it...he says it the best tranny he has even his lower mile ones dont run that good... and that he would replace it if i had trouble with it for a period after i get it in...what you think of that
Hmmm, I am sure those clutchs are welded together and that means they must be burnt. Makes no sense. Oh well.
I am not an advocate of used transmissions. I used to own a big transmission shop and saw lots of people burned buying used units. You just never know what you're getting. If you pull it yourself you can probably get a decent bench job or a reman exchange for under $1000 with a warranty.
4R70Ws are good units though. Mine went 236,000 mostly towing miles before I rebuilt it due to the roller clutch failing. Other than that it was still in great shape.
