swaping a 4.0L

Hey fellas was wondering if any of you knew what this swap would take as far as modifying and wiring.

I have a 92 ranger SWB with the 2.3L and 5spd. 2wd The engine is toast.
I know this guy who has a 91 exploder that his kid rolled and it has a running 4.0L with a 5spd. and is 2wd.

1. Will the tranny in my ranger bolt to the 4.0L or will I have to use the tranny it has?
2. Will the mount towers unbolt and bolt into my ranger crossmember?
3. Will the wiring harneses just swap out and the computer from the exploder plug into my harnes?

Thanks fellas.

The tranny is the same anyways, and you'll have to use the one from the 4.0L (diff bolt patterns).

You'll need the mounts from the Exploder, but they are a direct swap.

The wiring harnesses just swapping I'm not sure of, you just might get lucky though. Someone else will have to chime in on that. Considering the similarities between the Ranger and Exploder and the rather minute differences from year to year it just might work.

Well, thanks for the reply, I wasent too worried about the tranny or motor mounts nearly as much as the wiring that might be involved.
I would hope that the exploders computer just plugs into the rangers harness and as for the engine harness it would be nice if it just unpluged and the 4.0Ls pluged right in.

But this world is far from perfect and easy.

For starters, the number of cylinders/fuel injectors is different. So you're gonna need the harness and computer from the 4.0L donor.

Grab the entire intake system, including MAF.

There is also the issue of the ignition system. The 4.0L uses EDIS while the '91 Ranger is DIS; there is a difference between them. You will need the 4.0L EDIS module and wiring for it.

Well I figued all of the above but I didnt know if they maybe used one plug for all the rangers and others and just plugged in what the truck used.
Kinda like plug and play.

No. Most of the wiring colors will be constant, but you'll still have to split and splice everything in.

Good idea. But, if he doesn't want much for it, and you have the skills, could be a little weekend project to rebuild the 4.0L and tranny and drop them in. Of course if you have the money, time, and another vehicle.
