As an old farm boy I have used 4wd, but I never have been 4 wheeling. I would kind of like to see what all is involved and just where in this great state you go to use the 4 wd.
Can we set up a overnight camp out and a 4 wheel outing? Anyone interested, and any suggestions as to where?
I will be gone the next 2 weeks, but free after that.
There's La Grange off road park(kind of small), Hollister(best all around park), then there's logging road exploring that turns into a wheelin adventure. That's how we did it in OR. My first date with my wife was an afternoon 4 wheelin trip with my friends up in OR. The bad part is, I dont have a 4X4 anymore. The minivan bogs in the mud too easily, already tried that. There's a site just for all the off road parks in the state. A buddy/co worker that lives in Clovis that has a rock buggy Blazer, & he goes to some of the trails down south. He's part of the NorCalBigDogs site, just for the 4wheelin bunch.
I would go to Hollister if that is what it takes to get the San Jose group involved, otherwise La Grange sounds like fun to me.
With La Grange there seems to be several sites along with the off-road area. We could do a family day with a picnic.
Anybody interested?
"The La Grange Off-Highway Vehicle Park is located on Old La Grange Road just off J59, offering undeveloped camping, restrooms, picnic tables, barbeques, and 147 acres of abandoned gold dredge area dedicated to a wonderful off-road experience. Tentative site improvements include twenty developed campsites with picnic tables, potable water, campfire rings, and chemical vaulted restrooms."
Sounds like fun, but I'll have to take a rain check. My only 4X4 is my old Land Rover, and it's in dire need of attention, been non-opped for about 8 years now. I doubt it would make it that far...!
You don't need 4wd - your Tarus will run with most of the town rigs anyway.
If we do this, lets make it a run what you bring sort of thing - dirt bikes, yamahaulers, whatever. If no one will laugh at my jeep, I will keep my mouth shut should someone show up with a chevy 4wd.
I might even bring a horse if enough kids want a pony ride. It is a family picnic at a nice place, plus some dirt for those who want to play in it for a while. Mostly, with these sort of parks, the road is paved to the site, and you can see everything from the parking lot.
If we do it we will have someone scout the area first!
I wouldn't mind going but I am in the don't own a 4X4 group. I do have a granny gear in my 65 that is pretty stout.
I may just hitch a ride once we gather.
Somebody has to show Bronco babe how to break a 4 wd - but don't worry, I an carefull of my jeep as it is the only thing I have running right now.
It is a faithful little fellow - sort of like the miniature poodle I inherited. Not much dog, but tries hard. I will try to get my brother who lives nearby to come along - he takes his jeep places I wouldn't ride a horse!

Well Clint, if you really wanted some high Toiyabe Mountain fun, you should have stayed an extra day in Kingston. We just went on a nice trip over Ophir Creek Canyon and then to the Arc Dome trailhead............
