According to mercurycapri.com the 4.9 L 300 cubic inch inline six block has the same bolt pattern on the flywheel end as the 302 V8. That makes it seem like you could use the bell and trans from a 5.0L Mustang.
As for the clutch, might be able to use the one you have, nearly all Ford manual transmissions use the same 1-1/16" diameter x 10 spline input shaft. Don't know about linkage.
You might also want to look over at inliners.org, they have a lot of good tech stuff on the inline six cylinder engines.
One of the Mustang or Ford magazines on the news stands this month is showing a swap where a T5 is replacing a top loader, you would use the same adapter plate that they are using to bolt the T5 to your existing bell housing. Since most Ford transmissions use the same 1-1/16" diameter x 10 spline input shaft you should be able to use you existing flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disc.
There is another way. According to mercurycapri.com the 4.9L 300 cubic inch inline six has the same bolt pattern on the flywheel end as the 5.0L V8. That would say you can use the bell and trans from a 85-93 Mustang V8.
The 300, 289, 302 and 351W all share the same bell pattern. The 300 is a zero balance flywheel and the 351W has always been 28oz balance and the 30 was 28oz until 1982 when it went to 50oz. I think it's refered to as imbalance?
The T-5 would be an easy swap using the vintage mustang kit that uses the adapter plate mentioned above. This kit has been out for several years now. Not sure how the shifter end of it would work out for ya but it would be the easiest thing to fab up compared to a hyd clutch set up that would be needed for a ZF 5-speed swap or MAZDA 5-speed swap.
I would suggest the ZF swap myself. this is the strongest trans you can get for a truck.
I checked with these guys about doing the same for my van. Be sure to get a V8 model T5, preferably one from a Cobra Mustang with the lowest first gear at 3.35.
