97 AWD 4WD module needed

Looking for the 4WD module that sits under the drivers seat for a 97 AWD-van came without one and the one my buddy at the junkyard gave me may not be working-the vehicle it came out of flashed the same code as it does in my van.Found a new one but its $290 and I dont think its worth the money.Ford parts guy said it looks like the module is the same all years despite having differing part numbers. As an alternative I see some guys have just installed a switch-anyone clue me in as to what wires have to be switched or just all of them? Still I would rather just plug in the little module and take the easy way out......Anybody got a spare that I could try?My transfer case is brand new from Ford leftover stock so I think the module is the culprit.....

Hi Tim:

What code does it flash? And please remember, selling and buying are not allowed in the forum. Please do that through the classified section or through private messages.

Thanks

SPST switch on the orange wire to AWD computer cable plug, pin 13...other side of sw. to chassis ground....supplies ground to TC lockup solenoid to lock TC into 50% front/rear mode
use a bright light indicator switch because one does NOT want to leave in transfer case lockup during normal operation

Well duh, if the new one flashes the same code as the old one, it is trying to tell you that something is wrong with the AWD system, not with the computer. The code will tell you what the problem is. Good greif, I can't believe you assumed a code meant you have a faulty module. I guess a Check Engine Light means you need a new computer too.

Sorry, I don't intend to be mean, but we have a practice here called troubleshooting. It tells you what is wrong. We prefer not to replace parts at random. So next time you have a problem, attempt to diagnose it as opposed to replaceing a part that might be associated with the problem. Otherwise if my vehicle began missfireing, I could spend over $1,000 dollars replaceing the ignition module, distributor, wires, and other things that may not be bad, when all I needed was new plugs.

Sorry guys -what I meant about the module is that the van in the junkyard still ran and when I drove it the 4WD indicator was flashing twice-I took the module and put it in my 97 and it flashes twice still-considering the wiring appears intact and I sprayed all connectors with electrical cleaner and the transfer case is brand new (as is the short harness the sensors plug into)I was thinking it might be the module. My 97 didnt have a module when I got it-evidently they experienced transfer case problems in the past. This was easy to see as they installed a new front CV shaft,a new front differential, a new driveshaft and a new tranny-this was a governemnet vehicle and they spared none of our taxpayer dollars changing out parts. When I bought the van -(which noone had even sat in the rear two seats in) I had Ford install a brand new Ford 4.0 bobtail engine(with all new accessories hanging on it)-It runs like new but since I plugged that module in I get a two light flash(same thing it did in the 90 it came out of) So I am by process of elimination thinking it might be the module-I thought plugging in another module would be the simplest way to find out after alol what are the chances of two bad modules giving the same code?

AWD error code #2 is clutch connector or coil has discontinuity.
Ford Speak for problem with the wiring, connector or clutch coil in the transfer case.

do you have the Ford service manual for Aero?
can download and burn service cd from .iso this link click
use Ford truck your year

click Service > Transfer case E4WD > Diag&Testing>Transfer case>07-07>Diag& Testing Aero>Pinpoint Test FF E4WD clutch
takes you thru electric test of clutch, clutch connector and wiring for opens and shorts

AWD controllers are getting as rare as hen's teeth....know of no rebuilders repairing unit....might email Cardone, they do lots of other auto-truck controllers

few AWD controller failures, most problems are sensors, wiring and electrical clutch

cherry '97 Aero AWD with new engine package, can't get any better....is it Gov. white with the beige interior?

Its ok to ask.. Its in the guidlines. doesn't have to be in the classifieds.
The person responding should do email or pm.

Dick.

Also its fine to drive without the module as long as you want.

Unless you have a few feet of snow in August

But seriously, Tim, I would check the coil on the new T/C. You never know what you get on Ebay, plus the fact that you got it for only $300.

No its government white with grey interior-belonged to Immigation and Naturalization in New Jersey-they used it to go back and forth to the airport for their agents only-leaving it in long term parking-had a few interesting options when I picked it up-They had a plexiglass divider seperating the front buckets from the back(handy for when the kids get out of control) Also the car was wired with a police scanner and a loudspeaker under the wheel well-Auxilliary power panel wired into the rear tool storage compartment in which some agent had left their 9mm pistol. When I picked up the van- I lifted it gently with two fingers and asked the two nice armed agents (who were giving me the keys )if this was an option from Ford, they said somebody would have gotten into trouble if I had driven off with that-they laughed while I made sure there were no more hidden surprises my toddlers might find. Other than swapping in the baby seat middle bench I left all their stuff in place-I found that it draws alot of attention from the illegal aliens that congregate at the 7-11 looking for daywork. They must know the INS vans as they move quickly away when I pull in-If I ever used the loudspeaker they would probably be running for the hills.

I do think that the code it is giving you is serious. IF they have tested the module and they don't think that the coil is really bad, then it is most likely a wireing problem. Or the sensor could be bad. Something is bad or it wouldn't be giveing you a code on 2 different computers. About my above statement, I did not intend to flame you and I apologize for being a bit harsh. I just would have replaced the module as my first course of action. However, since you did, it is helpful as far as troubleshooting goes. It tells us the module is not at fault and is working as is is supposed to. The problem is elsewhere, and I belive the code tells all. Either the clutch connector is not makeing contact, or the coil has no continuity, or very high resistance. Make sure the connector is not corroded, and that the contacts inside are in good condition, spary out with electrical parts cleaner, and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the pins. I am not sure you would actually do this, but I imagine if you installed a multimeter in place of the coil, that the multimeter should produce a reading within 10% of the battery voltage. IF it does, the wireing up to the coil is good. The problem would be in the coil itself.
