You need to find c-channel the same measurements as your frame - 2"x4" with a 0.25" wall, or whatever your frame is. Measure carefully. Those pieces go in between the frame rails when you cut them.
Then you need a slightly larger piece of c-channel, to go OVER that addition, and about a foot to foot and a half on each side, extending onto the original frame where you've cut. Weld it all together.
Kind of the same principle as when you brake a bone, you have a thicker spot where the break is/was.
I extended an old crewcab this way about 24" or so, allowing me to mount a toolbox/generator between the cab and the bed.
