Engine cuts out (and back in) while driving?
While driving, my '92 Ranger 3.0 will have a big decelaration and then forward surge as the engine cuts out - and then immediately back in.
I get the impression that this is either a fuel or ignition problem.
Any suggestion on what order I should start testing/replacing things?

Well do you have a check engine light???? If so have you scanned the computer for trouble codes???? If so, post all you've found, as they can give us some good clues.
If you haven't scanned the computer, you can do so yourself, with the instructions in the "Technical Info" thread, atop this forums main page.
Or you could call around & see if your favorite autoparts store has a scan tool that'll do it, if so, most will scan the computer at no charge.
I agree, it sounds like a fuel delivery based problem to me, so questions like where are you on scheduled maintenance items, like a fuel filter, air filter, plugs & wires, ect, ect, come to mind.
Have you checked the fuel pressure & fuel delivery rate of the pumps???? If s what values did you get???
With a little more info & some troubleshooting checks by you, we should be able to get close to guessing whats wrong.
