floor shifter conversion

I just installed a floor shifter in my 64 and was wondering is there a way to get the shift collar off and replace it, or do I have to change out the whole column.

Yes you can change the collar but I'm not sure where you'd find one with out a nub off the side.

Push down on your horn center and twist 1/4 turn CCW and remove the center and spring and unplug horn wire. Next remove the big nut (13/16??) and install wheel puller. remove wheel and second spring. loosen the 2, 7/16 nuts at ~ 11 and 4 O'clock. The nuts hold two square head bolts that pinch in to an indent on the other side, just loosen them and spread them. Down just over your feet you'll find the blinker / horn wire connector you'll need to remove the wires from the connector Make a good diagram with all colors on both sides on the connector block marked as there not always the same! After you have the plastic connector block off use black tape and tape up wires so there flat. next tie a string ( like the type mom used on roast beef) to the end of the wire and tape over that. Look on the column you'll see an indent were the wires run in to the column I like to use a little grease on the tape i just put on , pull on turn signal plate (~1 inch thick) WHILE PUSHING wires up the column from down by your feet! Please don't just pull, other wise you'll be back for a rewire and messed up blinkers. Pull / push until you have ~6 inches of string up at the top. Unwrap tape and untie the knot. Now you should be able to see the shifter sleeve. Push the roll pin in the sleeve down and remove the shifter handle if you have not already. Then just slide off the sleeve and route the string in to the new sleeve and replace it. Don't forget to replace any and all wave springs and shims as they came out. Next retie the knot and re-tape the wires, grease up the wires just a little and lightly pull on the string while you push from uptop. Reverse the above etc.

Best of luck!!

PS: This is how you do it if you need to replace your 3 speed or auto sleeve. Some of you guys should print this and save it! you'll need it sooner or later.

I sure appreciate the the how-to. I found a collar off of a 63 that had a floor shifter in it. I think it will look a lot better than the old one with the nub on it.
Thanks Again.
