Trust me, as much as I've read on EGR's and stuff lately, I'm beginning to think about getting a job at a Ford dealership. I understand the principles quite well, and cut my mechanical molars on a re-build of a '58 Ford 8N tractor about 36 years ago, so I'm no stranger to engines. Being an electrical engineer with hybrid controls background (analog/digital), I'm no stranger to closed loop control either...
Old_Paint: another attaboy for that EGR post. Good stuff.
8N Ford tractors - hoooray! I am a Farmall and Ford tractor enthusiast myself. I've done a Cub and an 8N. But, but... the 8N was built between '48 (late '47 actually) and '52. In '53 a significant redesign (overhead valve engine, live hydraulics) became the NAA. By '55 they were producing two different sizes, the 600 series and the 800 series. Was your '58 maybe a '48?

Coulda been a '52, because I remember it had a flat-head in it. Really easy to change the plugs, which was a good thing. Seemed to need a new set every year. Also remember the PTO was driven off the pinion, which made it VERY dangerous when using a bush-hog if the drive clutch on the bush-hog seized up (which was very normal). Nice big flywheel back there. Learned to knock the tranny outta gear as soon as I pushed the clutch in to stop, and let the mower coast down. Got tired of getting pulled outta the creek. We also had a Cub Farm-All. Just had to remember to keep the left side of that one on the uphill side.
