Alright, so i'm going to be ordering an intake manifold and carb combo from summit racing pretty soon, and i'm wondering which to get, either the Weiand Manifold/ 600 cfm Holley Carburetor or the Edelbrock Manifold/ 600 cfm Carburetor? I'm leaning towards the weiand/holley, just because i've heard good things about the weiand on the 351m engine, but I will listen to suggestions..
Other than that, what else do I need to buy in addition to the kit?
SUM-CWND005KD is the part number for the weiand/holley on summit SUM-CEDL005 and SUM-CEDL005S are for the edelbrock combo (i'm not sure the difference between the two, the only thing i see is one has 'vacuum secondary' and the other has 'air valve secondary'.. can someone explain the difference to me? thanks)
and finally, the price is about 450-460 for the kits, how does that sound?
I feel most comfortable buying a kit because i'm not sure on exactly what I need.
edit: This is on a 78 bronco with a 351m.

I was happy with the EDelBrock intake manifold I installed on my 84 Bronco, ordered it from Summit also. Aside from the intake, get new bolts. For the carb, you may need an adapter or bracket if you have an auto tranny (C6) for the kickdown rod. The EDL intake only had one vacuum port, so I unhooked the cruise control and cleaned up about half of the "spaghetti bowl" of vacuum lines in top of the intake. When my 351W H.O. broke last Summer, it ws due to the intake manifold gasket leaking at the rear edges.Make double sure you seal it good with silcone along the corners. Last point, the back water passage was heavily clogged with scale and gunk. I read about a mod to the intake to plumb a line across the top of the intake from one side to the other for better water/coolant flow, might check into that. My engine was a new longblock kit with 20K miles and an F-250 radiator.
After having a edelbrock carbs and having sticky linkage problems i switched over to a holley street avenger carb and love it. No more linkage problems and seemed to make the motor run better then the edelbrock.
I have run both brands of intakes and carbs on several different engine/vehicle combonations. I personelly like Holley carbs better than Edelbrock for Ford applications, they just seem to run better on Fords for me. Both companies , Weiand and Edelbrock, make some outstanding intakes.
I really like the Weiand Stealth Intake Manifold, I have used them on 3 stroked 289's in 66-69 Mustangs, stroked 351 in 81 Bronco, and a 429 in 70 Mustang.
I was looking at those kits too, but can't afford them yet.
Like others have said, go with the Holley carb 600cfm. I would go with the weiand(power range idle-6,000RPM) too, but the edelbrock(idel-5,500rpm) would work just fine too.
They must of gone up with there prices, they used to be $430.
While your there, and have your intake off, it'd be a great upgrade to put a new cam and lifters too(summit RV cam about $95). The lifters would be right there when you take the intake off, and while your doing the upgrades, you might as well put a double roller timing chain(summit $35), and get rid of the retarted set stock unit. While the timming chain is off, you could replace the came while your there, so everything would be 2 for 1, if you know what I mean.
If you don't have headers(summit $90), that'd be somthing else to complete the build.
I would like to do everything you just mentioned, BUT, I need a parts list of what to buy, because i've never done this before and i'm not sure what to get, what will work with what, etc.
Alright, so I was looking through the Cams and I think I found on that suits my usage well, tell me what you think: part number: CCA-K32-242-4 on summitracing, its a comp cams kit that has the timing chain, lifters, everything else already. its 400 dollars for it. The rpm range on it is 1400rpm-5600, which seems perfect for offroading.
thus far my cart looks as follows:
CCA-K32-242-4
Cam/Lifters/Valvetrain, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 262/270, Lift .513/.520, Ford,351C/351M/400
SUM-G6621 This is the timing chain I was talking about.
SUM-K5200 This is the camshaft and lifters I was going to get.
The kit you found looks good(cam specs and quality parts), but I didn't even consider anything like that, b/c I don't have alot of funds.
If you have the money to replace the lifters, and valve springs, and everything else, then all the better, but my engine has 70,000 miles, so I'm hoping everything is still ok and useable so I don't have to replace them(just put them back in the exact same place).
Good luck with what ever you get, and let us know how it works.
Alright, so you think its enough quality improvement over the summit pieces to justify the extra cost??
Also, the timing chain that comes with the kit says its double non-roller. Whats the difference between that and a roller chain? Will I see/feel a difference?
Well if you think about it, if your engine seems to be in good enough shape to reuse most of the stuff, then the summit cam, lifters, and timing chain would cost $140 or so, and the other kit would give you extra stuff(if yours is in good condition, that doesn't need to be replaced), and cost $260 more.
I saw the pic of the timing chain on the site, and it was a roller chain, and unless that isn't your exact kit, then I'm not sure.
I've seen timing set ups with out a chain, and just the sprocket gears, but haven't heard anything good about them to switch to that.
