Can anyone tell me what is a good front disc brake setup, for factory 47 front spindles. I have heard 48 f-1 kits are compatible, but i have never had this confirmed. also has anyone ever used posies dual flex springs and if so how much did they lower the front end . Thanks for any help!!!
The drum to disc swap is pretty straight forward. Most all the kits out there are good. Really, all the kits really are just the brackets and then stock style rotors and pads, calipers, etc. I did the sawp using a kit produced by a local shop here in town. I went with the small Ford bolt pattern of 5 on 4.5. The calipers are mid '70's GM (Monte Carlo) and the rotors are late '70's Dodge. Save yourself the time thoguh, and buy the complete kits, easier than some of the other kits that require you to scrounge for the rotors and such on your own. Check out Stainless Steel Brakes Corp, Master Power, and otheres. You can find them frequently listed in mags like Street Rodder and Rod & Custom.
I like my Wilwood disc very well. Others here are probably getting tired of hearing it too. They were bolt on to my 46 spindles, which have dropped aftermarket steering arms. Available through Speedway, and include aluminum hub and aluminum 4 piston calipers. I am not using a booster, and the 10.75 inch rotors stop well with a heavy foot on hard stops. If the panel is much heavier than a pickup, it may work best with booster. You will also need different MC, residual valves front and rear, and proportioning valve.
My front springs arent Posies, but single leaf reversed eye. Combined with a 4 inch dropped axle, it is as low as I want, but not nearly as low as some trucks.
Not mentioned above is that the '42-47 spindles are the same as '42-48 Ford passenger car spindles, so any kit for '42-48 passenger cars will fit exactly. Many manufacturers and vendors are unaware of the 42-47 pickups.
In the past I have used the master cylinder adapter from Chassis Engineering http://www.chassisengineeringinc.com/ for 39-40 Fords part number AS-2021 and a Mustang II non-power master cylinder.
Be sure to add residual check valves as necessary.

Good reminder Mike, and the point about mfgs. being unaware of the 42-47s. My rear single leafs advertised by Sacramento Vintage Ford for F-1s are doing fine on the 46.
