I just finished stripping all of the brake hardware and sandblasting of the rear axle on my 64. Looks great. I did notice that the flange gaskets have been leaking and want to replace the gaskets, axle seals and possibly the bearings if needed. Looks simple enough but parts are the problem.
Motorhaven lists nothing. :-(
My local parts houses list nothing.
Sacremanto Vintage Ford and Dennis Carpenter have everything but I believe I can find them cheaper. :-)
My question is: What years and from what models were the SAME 9" rear axle used? In other words, can I go into Napa and ask for axle parts for a 84 F150 and get the right parts? I want to replace the wheel cylinders and drums as well.
Krosati: I believe the bearings and seals for all 9" axles were the same from '66 to 78. It didn't matter if they were 29 or 33 spline axles, or if they were the later long ones; the bearings stayed the same. Perhaps this helps.
When I get home tonight, I'll check my Ford parts manual, and I'll try to get the part number for a '64, and see if it is different for '66.
You might try taking it to a machine shop, and asking their advice, since they press those bearings off and on.
If memory serves me right therse only three 9" bearings but you never know.
Randy's can answer this and it toll free!

Carpenter sells the inner and outer flange gaskets for $1 each which is reasonable except you have to wait to get them. I tried at the dealer and it is discontinued. I ended up buying gasket material and making my own for a couple bucks. Neither seem to make any sense. If you go through deep enough water the water will sit in the cavity where the bearing is. I ended up splitting one of the gaskets to let water drain out. It will also let extra axle lub that gets by the seal out which will eventually make a mess. There are no perfect solutions.
Thanks fellas, Your input was helpful. I guess I will still need to pull the axles before I buy all the parts though.
I'll try to let you know exactly what I find out.
