drone experiment, input needed

I have a 4" turbo to straight thru resonating muffler to 5" out.
Intake is a kwik filter. soon to be ais when the cash starts flowing.
Getting a wide range of drone. 1700 to 2000 rpm and it seems to resonate thru my spine.
So I aquired some left over material at a jobsite.

http://www.mpsupplies.com/3mfiremasterductwrap.html

Would there be any benefit to wrapping all or part of the exhaust system?
There is pleny of material and the insulation is rated to hanle the temp's.

Possibly start from the tail and test every 4 feet or so?
Or maybe just wrap the muffler?

Thanks for any input.

Excellent! I was thinking of doing the same with some wrap from Jeg's. I believe u only need to wrap the section of pipe located under the cab right up to the downpipe. Think of your cab as a resonant cavity. The Excursions can have real bad drone.

I was thinking my brain was the resonant cavity.

I have a V10 excustion that rattles a little too, even with a banks system.

I'll be tackling this later this week after a little more input.

I would think the scrim would go a couple feet before the muffler, all the way a couple of feet aft of it. In my experience the drone originates before the restriction and then is amplified at the short end of the pipes. Try adding spring hangers to see if the drone goes away. The down pipe on my black car is suspended with spring hangers and then the rest of the system is fastened directly to the frame. No drone, which was a HUGE problem before. Considering I could fit the PSD turbo and exhaust piping in "Black's" compressor.

One of the best things you can do eliminate the drone is to put something on the DP such as a resonator or Exhaust Guide http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/exhaust_guide The drone is caused by a harmonic resonance that turns the exhaust pipe into a speaker under the truck, so changing the frequency of the exhaust can move the drone out of the rpm range you run at most of the time or eliminate it. The Exhaust Guide works to change the frequency by reducing the turbulence and directing the exhaust straight down the pipe.

No muffler, no drone to speak of. I didn't seem to have a problem with it before I side dumped either. Then again, my pipe is pretty thick.

TMI about your pipe.
But seriously I am going to try out wrapping with fire wrap tonight.
I have some large clamps and some metal tape to hold it temporarily as I beta test.
I'll go for the under side of the cab section and cross my fingers.
Some thin metal flashing may bewrapped after I test to get it water proof.
Thanks for the good advice.

As a cheap experiment for a very short distance, try covering your 6637 air filter with an old towel to try and muffle the intake sounds coming out. Wrap it around the filter like a blanket. Use several if you have them and close the hood, gently. Don't leave it there after you've test driven it! That setup will seriously slow down the filtration. Just to get rid of any doubt as to the source of your droning noise.
I got rid of my 6637 air filter in favor of an AIS intake system and all my drone disappeared.

I wrapped from the bottom of the downpipe just above the elbow.
under the cab I could only get the top of the pipe.
I completely wrapped the muffler and the 3 feet in front of it.
Sound went from a 9 out of 10 to a 6.
I swear the sound is from the bent piecewrapping around the rear axle.
I have seen exhausts ejecting in front of the rear wheel, but why not just elbow down from the muffler?
Sounds like AIS will help get rid of this as well.
A few towels is a cheap test too.

Thanks

That is hard to argue with. I guess I will have to change my sig as the 6637 mod will no longer be known as the Kwikk mod. I have something, just not sure it is a drone with my 5" system. I guess I will have to experiment.
