I bought that R134a "cross-over" kit at Wal-Mart. Then, I just hooked it up, per the directions, and let 'er rip.
All you do is connect it to the low side, I believe, and inject the R134a just like you would the R-12. Turn your A/C on MAX and the fan on high while doing this procedure. As long as you read over the directions that come with the kit, you'll be just fine.

I converted a 1992 Ranger with the old R-12 system, and a 1989 Buick Century with the R-12 system, also.
If it doesn't blow cold, you have a leak. If you have a leak, it will only get worse. Let a pro fix it. Or, just send me the several hundred dollars you'll spend on r134a that leaks out, and I'll just remind you to think cold thoughts.
They make some stop leak you can put in the A/C system and it seemed to fix my small leak (needed recharging about every three years). The A/C works good with the R-134a in my '87, it just takes about 3 minutes to get cool while driving. Good luck.
