I just saw in another thread that there is a trailer charging circuit. He said something about the fuse being under the hood. Does anyone know for sure which fuse this might be and possibly which connection to put a meter on to make sure I am getting voltage in the correct pin in the big round plug that plugs into the fiver? Thanks for any advice.....Dave
I can't remember the fuse number, but it's a 30 amp maxi-fuse (big fuse) that's in the fuse block in the engine compartment. Mine blew a fuse before, and I checked my owners manual to find out which one it is.
As far as which pin it is, look on the cover over the round plug. It should have molded into it which pin is for what circuit.
I blew the trailer fuse trying to start the trailer generator (when it's batteries were low), so be careful and either let the truck's alternator charge them or plug the trailer into shore power and start the generator.
On my 99 the trailer tow battery charge is #16 on the maxi fuses under hood. That is fourth down on pass side of block going from rear to front.30A. Ive always used the center prong on the round plug for 12V charge circuit.
Dave, are you using a 7 pin RV blade plug or 6 pin round plug? 7 Pin blade. Pin 4 is charge circuit, 6 pin round, center pin 6 is charge. Center on 7 pin blade is tied in to the reverse circuit. i.e. 12v there only when in reverse, great point to add aux backup lights. Also keep in mind that if the key is not on in our trucks, you will not have power to either of these circuits at the plug. Both are relayed.
I am smarter than the average bear...honest....I have been out under the hood in daylight and after dark with a flashlight and I have no clue where that fuse panel is. Is it hidden or would this model have all of the fuses inside the cab? It's the standard issue 2002 F350 dually crewcab XLT Lariat. Not sure but will go look again...and dig around for the book. It should tell me...and as for the plug, it's the round 7 wire setup......6 flat and one round in the middle.......Thanks for all the input....Dave
Dave, it's on the driver's side, against the fender, back close to the firewall. The cover should have some wording molded into it. It releases with two tabs on the front of it and should pivot up and to the back, just like the hood does. Your owners manual should also be able to direct it right to where it is.
Thanks for all the input...I was able to find an owners manual and it didn't mention anything about a fuse panel under the hood. It said to take the trim panel off from underneath the steering colum. I found the big fuse box under there. It pointed to fuse #115 I believe. "Trailer battery charge circuit" or something close to that wording. It is about 3/8 inch square fuse like I've never seen before.....Not the typical blade but like a square peg and it is a 20 amp fuse that kinda looks like a copper coil with solder joints inside, and it was definitely smoked.. I think the wifie must have plugged the trailer into the shore power while the umbilical cord was still plugged into the truck...and the weakest link was the fuse. Our last trip we were out 12 days and unless we fired up the generator in the back of the truck or pluged into a campground, we were on battery power....the first couple of night while we were driving should have kept the battery full, but the second night, we had to start the generator to get the fan running....it was about 90 that evening!! We made it to Pocono with an almost dead battery and the generator saved the day....Thanks for everyones help....I don't know why the fuse was under the dash but it was......Hopefully not have to go Ford to get that fuse....
The reason that the fuse was under-dash instead of under-hood is that Ford moved all the fuses to one location in either model year 2001 or 2002. I believe the latter. They changed the owner's manual at the same time to reflect this, too.
Well that explains it....Since I have been "married" to this websight, I have taken everything I have read as gospel...so far about 99.999% has been accurate, or at least as far as I could tell anyway .
When I could not find the fuse box under the hood, my wife thought I was off the deep end, since I was out looking under the hood at midnight with a flashlight, under the hood in the morning, and finally looking after I got home from work! I finally found out the information I was looking for, and I appreciate all of everyones input, and as always I have definitely learned something new today. Seems like everytime I come here, I learn something.....if you don't learn somehting, your not trying!! Take care and thanks for everyone's help.........Dave
