Could someone tell me are they the same, if not whats the difference! i would like to build another 302, here in England there are not that many about and the ones i am being offered are 80s ones, the one i have is a 73, i just want to swap everything over, all your help appreciated, regards Alan.
Alan, the early '80s blocks won't be substantially different from your '73. In '85 the roller cam was introduced in the Mustang, so the lifter bores are taller to give better support to the longer roller lifters. That's about the only real difference that might affect you. You can run flat lifters in a roller block, but you can't run stock Ford roller lifters in a non-roller block without a special smaller base-circle cam that allows the lifters to sit lower in their bores.
You can however, run aftermarket tie-bar roller lifters in a non-roller block.
If you're offered early '80s heads to go with those blocks, just leave 'em. The worst of the heads were from '77 to about '83, low compression smog heads.
