Performance upgrades?

I and a new and proud owner of a 99 7.3L SD. I am amazed at what is out there for bolt on performance mods and the power that they produce. What do you suggest to get the most bang for my buck. Intake, chip and exhaust seems to be the norm, but which ones work best. O, and of coarse as everyone does I what more power without sacrificing MPG too much.

Welcome to .

You will need a set of gages b4 adding mods. EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp), boost and tranny temp (automatic only).

EGT is a must or any mods you make may cook the turbo.

I'll second that. Lay all the ground work (gauges, intake, and exhaust) before turning up the heat.

Thread moved.

Welcome to the Dark Side, The others are right. Get the gauges in before you turn up the heat, you got to be able to see what's going on. You can do the 6637 filter mod, ccv mod, fuel thank and line mods, and exhaust mods without gauges and without any danger to your engine. Hang around and congrats on your truck.

Mods have to be done is a certain order. The reason why the thinking is out there that if you add a chip or tuner to your truck it won't last and you will blow something up comes from folks who add 150 ponies to a totally stock powertrain and drive it like they stole it. As already mentioned gauges are your first step, besides being able to monitor different parameters it will give you a good baseline so you can see ho all future mods affect your truck. I like the Isspros EV's very high quality and they match the factory units perfectly. Best price and service can be had at www.kensperformancesolutions.com Ken sells all three gauges with Apillar and complete install kit for under $300 delivered to your door. Next is intake and exhaust. You can do a DIY Tymar type for $50, or for $200 you can do the AIS which is the best filtering filter out there. I myself don't like the extra noise that comes from a open element unit, others love it. For the exhaust, if you don't plan on adding more than a 100 ponies you don't need a full 4" exhaust, you can do a Walker BTM from Napa for $40. Between my AIS/BTM combo my EGT's dropped 100-150 degrees. I am running DPTuners 80 econo tune, which dyno's at 103 extra HP, at the rear wheels and can't get my EGT's above 1200. Jody say the AIS/BTM is a perfect combo for the 80 econo tune and can even handle the 120 race but I would need to watch the gauge more. If you are going to do the 100 or 120 race tune I would do the full 4" exhaust. If you have a auto tranny you need to support it as well. You can do a $50 sonnax spring kit or go all the way and do a completely tuned valvebody for $200-$250. You can get these at dieselsite.com (FTVB, which I love) or Brian at BTS makes a good unit as well. Now and only now are you ready to add extra ponies. I like going with a tuner like DPTuner because if you need something changed to meet a specific need Jody will make those changes for you. If you decide to buy a tuner like the SCT2 with his tunes installed any changes as well as totally new tunes can all be done by email. How cool is that??? I hope this has helped. You can email me at walknmiracle@triad.rr.com with any more ???
Take care.
Kevin/NCHornet.

Man, I am sure glad that I found this website, it is like hanging out at the garage with your buddies and they all now whats going on! Ok, now on the DPTuner that everyone is talking about, where can I see this or is there a way of e-mailng Jody. Does he make a good tuner with a monitor for changing on the fly? I am going to NAPA tommorow to get the filter, do I just take out the compete factory air box and add the filter to the end of the intake.

yes, remove the air box and slip the filter on the boot if it will fit. i had to heat my boot up to get it to slip over the neck of the filter. hasn't budged since. most likely the stock clamp will not work so you will want to get a small one to take apart and run into the stock one. the clamp has notches out of it that line up to the boot's neck.

Do not use a K& N drop in filter they have been known to dust several diesel engines.

Jody is the very best when it comes to tunes for the 7.3. You can contact him at DP-Tuner.com
You have a few options you can have him reflash your stock PCM with a performance tune for $75. If you want to keep your factory tuned PCM, you can purchase a new PCM with the tune of your choise. The PCM by itself can only hold one tune. If you want more than one tune you can use his multi position chip. He just came up with a new device that can hold up to 16 different tunes, but most will choose 6 and under. I suggest one of these be a stock program. Of course the price goes up with each tune, you can shift on the fly with this set up. Or you can go with the SCT2 like me and gain code reading and other useful features. PM me for any ???

Black face, green lighting, if you have the white face gauges Isspro makes those too. I didn't use the multi colored pyro gauge, mine is all black like the others. They look and perform awesome especially at night.

reputation points... it is a thing that FTE has, if you feel like someone really deserved to get a "pat on the back" for something they did, you can give reputation points to them. OTOH if someone is a troll or the forum idiot you can give them negative reputation, and they will get a mark for it. the little green sqare(s) next to everyone's name is the amount of reputation points they have. negative reputation is red. i thought you had a nice post and instead of saying what you just said i just gave some reputation. to give points, look in the top right corner of the post you want to repute. there is a # for the post, to the right of that, there is the reputation button. not sure what is is, but it is either a trophy or a scale weighing something. anyway click on it and there will be a box pop up..

wow do i ramble...
