Got the knock pegged. Apparently it's common enough that ford put out a paper on it. It's the injector on #8 clyinder. There is a special replacement injector made that is specific for that problem, and designed to fit in #8 hole only. I haven't got all the technical jargon on it yet, as I haven't been able to get up to the shop and get the truck, but will post some of it in the next few days. It (the knock) doesn't hurt the engine, according to the paper. farmhand@telus.net
that is the long lead injector they put in #8 in some trucks to reduce the knock cant remember the exact years but check here far a chart on the LL applications (scroll to the bottom
Ford did the cackle fix, replacing AD injector with the LL8.It didn't help except to create a different noise. I replaced the LL8 with the AD injector, did a regulated fuel return mod and all the other fuel line and tank mods.I took the truck to a reputable diesel shop and had an analyzer check done. One of the injector is not performing properly which is creating the knock and a slight miss. They told me not to do anything at this time. It will eventually get worse and then it will have to be replaced.
The performance is good and the mileage is good.It starts good, cold or hot and the idle is good.So at this time,it's not broken,so I will not fix it, just put up with the knock.
So what exactly will a cylinder controbution test tell me. how is it different than a buzz test
I live in Western NC. The auto shop at the school i teach at has some scanner that i know can do a buzz test but i'll have to ask about a controbution test
CCT measures the amount of force each cylinder is applying to the crank compaired to the others. Any varience > 1% is generated as a code to let you know which cylinder.
The test they did just showed that there was one injector that was not up to par,did not show which one.
Do you mean that if I change out the weak injector my mileage will increase? It runs good now,and mileage is good,I am always for better!
I am near Anaconda,MT. Not too much around here.
Where can I get the CCT or BUZZ(?) test performed and the approx. cost? Do you recommend F--D? IYO,should I replace the problem injector? Will it harm the engine if I don't? It 's noisy mostly at idle.
Thanks for your continued interest.
Best and cheapest place to get a replacement injector?

well ford will charge you probably 75 bucks or so.
thats almost a 1/3 of the price of a scan tool.
cookie posted a link to some pretty cheap injectors a few days ago. you could always have an injector shop repair what you got.
