My brother in law has a 78 broc with a built 400 and a 4spd. He has the option of picking up a later 5spd out of a early 90's pick up. He would like to use the ortiginal transwer case. Is there and adapter or does it bolt up. Any help wpould be appreciated thanks
With the big block, unless the 5-speed is a ZF, he will need to do some adapting before he ever gets to the T-case. The M5OD (Mazda 5-speed found in 90's half-tons) was never married to a big block that I am aware of. By the same token, the t-case in the 78's never saw the transmissions that were used in the newer trucks. By the 90's the t-case was a Borg Warner unit and in 78 they were still New Process units if I am recalling correctly. If the 5-speed he is getting is a ZF, then you may have better luck but you will need to search newer trucks that are 3/4-1ton models (F-250 & 350 models). However, I am not even certain the NP unit in the 78's will be a direct fit for the ZF.
Out of sheer curiosity, why the need for a 5-speed with a NP 435 (virtually bullet-proof in my personal opinion) already in place... I mean overdrive is nice but with a big block the fuel savings aren't even gonna be that great.
The 78 Bronco will likely have the NewProcess (NP) 205 t-case. IT has a special housing/intermediate adapter the bolts to the transmission made of cast iron and slotted for the 2 shifter rails. This adapter shares the Ford transfer case bolt pattern, and should bolt up directly to a Ford 4-sp/5-sp tranny. Not 100% of the time, but in most cases. The ZF 4WD 5-sp was used on both smallblock and bigblock motors (most common with BB), so make sure the new tranny is from a BB if bolting to your 400M. Places like Motive Gear and Novak Enterprises have great tech info on tranny swaps, spline counts, etc. for this type of swap. I agree with GS92 that the NP435 MT is a very good model, and easy to find in salvage yards. Unless the ZF-S47 is a good deal, as they can be pricey for a used one. JSM84
I am sorry i should have been more specific. the 5sod is from a early 90's 3/4 ton 460 that a friend of his owns. which developed an engine knock. the rerason for the 5spd is that is sitting 6" higher than normal with 35's and will have 4.56 gears with lockers real soon. wants to be able to crawl and not tach the motor out going down the highway. thanks for the help
