Here is the set-up to my question and observations...
When the motor has been driving hard and hot, I get a squeel upon shutting off the motor. It happens no other time... only on shut down when very hot outside and the motor is hot.
Dealer could hear it too and suspected belt or pullys that are part of the surpentine belt system on the 6.0L. They are aware of TSB's for belt issues, but mine is not frying... but they could hear the noise.
They pulled the belt loose and first tested each pully for excess play and alignment... they found nothing. Next, they have decided to order a new belt and try as they "think" that it may have glazed???
Here are my questions:
1) Is a glazed belt or squeeling belt with only 77,000 miles on it covered under the motor warrenty?
2) The dealer has no 6.0L belts in stock, nor does any others in the KC area... and they had to order from the Ford regional warehouse... and it will take 1 - 2 days (they ordered for overnight and it did not show up). Is this normal that in all of KC no 6.0L Ford Surpentine Belts would exist?
3) My dealer is Shawnee Mission Ford and they are great and do a lot of diesel work (7.3's and 6.0's).. but their Ford Techs have not done any "replacement belt" work since the roll-out of the 6.0L... I am the first... and they are a large dealership!!!
4) Many on this site criticise the 6.0L and in this case the surpentine belts and FOrd has 1 or 2 TSB's out for them... but it must not be that big of a problem in the scheme of things if my dealer (Shawnee Mission Ford) has not had to do a replacement belt on a 6.0L until mine came along?
Any thoughts, comments or opinions on my squeeling, warrenty coverage or wait time for a new Ford belt?
Thanks,
Jeff

At this point I havent had any issues with the belt on the 6.0. I have replaced 1 to date. The belts have been virtually trouble free. As a result, it doesnt suprise me that they are hard to get. If I was to start looking for your noise, I would go the same direction as your dealer. There was problems at one time with the p/s pump being pressed on too far causing premature problems. Look at the pump, the shaft should be flush with the pulley. Imagine everything spinning with engine speed, a diesel, when you shut it off, is off right now. The squeal will be on the component that cant shut off that fast. Have them pay close attention to the tensioner, if its weak, it cant control the components(p/s--a/c--alt---water pump)
I have yet to have to replace a belt on a 6.0, other than ones that have had tracking issues caused by hydraulic pumps being installed or had blown A/C compressors. How long does the noise last? Could be the fan clutch...
Yeah, mine squeeks and has done that upon shutdown since i bought it new. I have heard many others do it, and it is not a 'problem'. For wahtever reason that belt tends to squeek because when you shut it down, the engine comes to an abrupt and screeching halt a tad before that belt does, which is why it squeeks. Mine oddly enough doesnt do it in the winter time or when its real humid. I wouldnt mess with it.
well it depends on how you feel about doing it and the size of your arms. the difficult way for me is not removing the stator and fan clutch. it can be done by having alot of patience and using the lock tang on the belt tensioner to lock the tensioner in the loose posistion. me personally, i take the fan and stator off just because i dont have skinny arms and dont like to fight much.
There is no need to cut the fan shroud. If you loosen the radiator brackets, the shroud will slide up in one piece.
As to the sqeaking belt, I would suspect that it might be due to the fan clutch being engaged when the engine is warm. I wouldn't worry too much about.
As others have said, I have yet to replace a 6.0l belt due to normal wear.
Lots of trucks out here do that little squeak when you snap the switch off. I really wouldn't worry about it unless it looks cracked on the ribs.
I keep a spare belt in the truck, and at the time I didn't have any trouble getting one. I don't know if that's a local thing or what.
You can do the belt by yourself, but it isn't fun. I borrowed another pair of arms and took the don't remove the stator approach. I took off the little upper part with the "Power Stroke" emblem on it, though.
I don't know about a dual alternator belt replacemant, but on my '03 the fan is driven by the flat outside of the belt. The belt doesn't need to go around the front of the fan so I don't see why the fan, fan clutch and shroud need to be removed just to change a belt on a single alternator Power Stroke. Get the tension off the belt by your preferred method, go underneath and remove the belt from the crank shaft, power steering pump, AC and idlers. Go up top and the belt should come out over the top of the fan pully.
Removing the 'little upper part with the "Power Stroke" emblem on it' is easy and gives more room to work in the area of the alternator and tensioner.
There isn't a lot of room to work so those with big arms are definetly at a disadvantage.
I also remove the fan and stator when anywork has to be done on the accessory drive. It may look like a difficult job, but really it only takes about 20 minutes to remove, and saves on the band-aids!
