Where is this bypass located and how do i check it? When running at hiway speeds or in stop and go traffic i have no problems. It only overheats when going up step hills at slow speed. I pulled the grapevine in SoCal at 45-50 with no overheat problems.

The bypass is on the passenger side of the trans. It's a tube that connects at the front of the trans at the line to the cooler and goes to the rear of the trans at the cooler return line. I don't know that there is a way to test it, they are relatively inexpensive though. That's probably not the problem if it only overheats in the situation you described. I would get a good trans cooler, the trucool max is one a lot of us use http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=205 . You might consider an electric fan to keep the air moving at slow speeds.

Look here. Not sure how you check it except that when it gets hot, go on the underside and check the lines. If one is hot and the other is cooler, I would say it is working. If both are cool, you have a problem there. Go as close to the radiator as possible. That is the only test I can think of unless you have another person to check the way the site says to do.
I would say that the Tru-Cool is going to cost more than the 6.0 one and it isn't as large nor will it bolt on.
i am looking at installing a trans cooler in my ex but I am wondering if it is possible to have trans temp too low.
I ask because I put the largest trans cooler I could find on my 1996 Bronco and the trans seems like it needs to warm up a little before it starts to shift 100% properly. For the first 30 seconds of running my bronco I hear a loud fan like sound. But if I let the truck warm up I have no problems at all.
I want to again install the largest cooler I can find for the ex but I also want to install a fan with the cooler. I would be installing this, while still using the stock cooler
