First off 2003 EX 6.0 with approx 63,000 miles never had problem. Now on the way home last night, when i would slow down or stop, all gauges would cut off, radio, ac would dim, and lights would dim. WHen i returned to accelerate all things returned to nomal. Vehicle never stalled or quivered.
Tokk it straight to dealer. They call and say both Batteries are dead, plus need a new ALT........$1,100.00
My questions are does the diagnosis sound right, because to me it does not, and how do they justify charging over 3 times the going rate?
A car will run without a battery but will not run without an alternator. Could be it was running off the alternator and power to everything would increase with the increase in rpm's. The price, sounds a bit too high.
My guess is defective battery and the alternator is overworked trying to keep the battery charged and run all the power equipment at low rpm. This will result in high ampreage draw and low voltage which could make it appear that the alternator is bad. I would replace both batteries and then drive the vehicle,, let the alternator have a chance to charge it,, then check the alternator. NEVER would I replace alternator and batteries at the same time. Batteries fail frequently alternators much less frequent. Too often I have had dealers tell me alternators were bad when the battery had internal shorted cells bringing down voltage from the alternator. Hope you didn't spend the $1100 yet. Jim
