97 F-250 PSD - Potential Problem
Doing some research, there is a class action suit ( http://www.ford-problems.com/tie-rod-problems.htm ) reference tie-rod end failures in 97 thru 03 F-250 with an estimated failure rate of 2:1. Further investigation with the NTHSA (National Transportation Highway Safety Administration) has shown numerous other reports of either partial or complete failure of the intermediate steering shaft assemblies in 1997 and 1998 F-150 and F-250 pickup trucks. Ford admitted in a letter dated January 13, 2003 that these trucks were equipped with an aluminium steering coupler but doesn't admit fault. The NTHSA action number is EA02001 and has issued a Recall Campaign Number of 03V196000. School buses built on the same frame and suppension have had a recall.
I spoke with Ford today, the customer service rep. said, "We are aware of a "potential" problem, but Ford has no plans of issuing a recall or advisory." Then said, "Thank you for purchasing your Ford vehical."
