Loose 3 speed shifter??

In looking into why there is so much play in my 3 spd column shifter, the worst seems to be in the shift collar (where the shift lever attaches to the column). There is a little play in the shifter arm itself(I am not concerned with that right now) but A LOT of play in the collar itself. Holding the collar, I can rotate it @ 45 degrees before there is any resistence. What would be causing this?? I am trying to pinpoint the issue so I can buy the correct thing to fix it. I do not want to "throw darts" at a problem that I do not understand.

Thanks,
Farrell

Loose 3 speed shifter??

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Aug-02 AT 10:49 AM (EST)]Farrell: A couple of things here, but it sounds like you are on top of things.
1. If the collar moves, but the linkage below doesn't, it is the collar or the shift tube inside. I have had to replace my 36 year old collar, because they are made out of pot metal, and just wear out.
2. If the linkage arms on the steering column under the hood move in sync with the collar, it is the rubber bushings, the lower linkage, or the transmission shifter inside that is the problem.
If you cannot find a collar, I've got a good used one, but contact me off-list.

Loose 3 speed shifter??

Hey Banjo - The best I can tell, only the collar moves. Does this mean I need to replace the shift tube, or could there be any issues in the bottom of the column where the shifter arms come out of the column? I just replaced the shifter linkage bushings and the shifter arms coming out of the transmission do not appear to have excessive play. How hard is it to replace a shifter column and what is the best source for buying one (I will go look in the store on this site while I wait for an answer)?

While I have your ear banjo, what would cause grinding to occur only going into reverse?

Thanks for the insight and quick response,
Farrell

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Aug-02 AT 11:08 AM (EST)]Farrell: It's kind of hard to tell without actually pulling it apart. But, like I said, since the collar is just pot metal and the rest is steel, it stands to figure the collar is probably bad.
About reverse grinding. You have no synchronizers in reverse, so it's going to grind. Sometimes double-clutching will help - unless the tranny is worn out.

By the way, my day job is network security and computer forensics. That means I often just sit here and watch. So, when it's quiet, and nothings going on, I monitor the site.
Makes it easy!
