I noticed a small squeek coming from the rear drivers wheel. Kind of listened to it for a few days. I checked the brakes, they are still in real good shape. Kind of decided it must be a bearing. Took it to the dealer and they can't seem to even get it to make the noise. As I was changing the oil tonight and going over things, I checked the fluid in the rear diff. It doesn't smell like the normal gear lube and is more grayish black in color. If memory serves, doesn't the gear lube from the rear end lube those bearings out at the wheels? Is it possible that those bearing are not getting lubricated the way they should? I am heading to the North Slope here in Alaska which involves about 400 miles of gravel road and there aren't too many repair shops up there. Anyone got any advice? Your book will have this quantity in it, dont forget if its an LS, you need the friction modifier as well. If ythe level is up to the check hole you should be ok. Yes, the oil in the pumpkin is what lubes those outside bearings.
yeah, it just amazes me that ford couldn't even tell me that the fluid needed changed. guess i should have checked it before i took it to the dealer! thanks! Eric
Are you positive the squeek is a wheel bearing? I have constant squeeks that come from all four wheels. You can really hear them at slower speeds. My squeeks are due to leaf springs.
I thought I had a problem with mine, but I tracked it down to where the emergency brake cable passes through a wire loop on the side of the frame. Squeaks like crazy. Just put some grease on it and solved the problem.
