I have an F 53 Ford Chassis motor homewith the 1994 460 cid V-8. It idles poorly and dies a lot when cold. I took it to a Ford truck dealer, who said the diagnostic computer would not tell them what is wrong. They also made it die more often and idle worse, and the engine check light is now on whereas it wasn't before. Can anyone tell me what part I need to enable the trouble codes to show (and where it is on the engine)? Also, any ideas to check for the idle/dying before I take it back to a shop?

You do not need any tool to read the trouble codes to show and understand what they mean.
You just ground C199 VIP Data Link Connector LH rear of engine compartment, on bracket.
Set in the driver’s seat with paper and pin, turn the key to on and count the flashes on the Check engine light (MIL).

Read your codes and post them back and we will help you more.
I'll try this. It will take a week or more because I'm off on a business trip tomorrow. Don't Ford technicians try this when the code reader doesn't work? I wonder why they didn't.

The code reader is just a handy way of doing the same thing, when they plug in the reader and they flip the switch (if it has one) on it just grounds the C199 VIP Data Link Connector (STI). Then they have an LED light (and sometimes a buzzer) on the reader that is hooked to the Check engine light (MIL) wire so they can read the flashes to get the codes. Some Very hi dollar readers (computer types) will also try to translate the flashes into what they mean.
There is also a possibility that he did not have a good connection to his reader as they use them a lot and the plugs can get bad or your pin in your STI connector might have been oxidized.
When you turn on the key with out starting the engine does your fuel pump run for one second and stop or does it keep running all the time?
If you can not read codes and the fuel pump runs all the time then more than likely you have a bad PCM Computer.
I will not comment on why the Ford technicians do what they do at this time.
The fuel pump does run for just a few seconds. I followed the instructions from Fordfuelinjection.com for getting the codes, and got the following: first, a flickering of the light, as expected. Then it flashes 1, then 2 times, pauses, flashes 6 and 3, pause, flashes 3 and 4, pause, 5 and 3, then flashes 9 times and pauses. There is then a repeat of the 12, 63, 34, 53 and 9, then another pause. It then flashes 11,11 pause, 11, 11. I ran through this multiple times to confirm the readings. If I understand the Fordfuelinjection.com information correctly, the flickering light is running through the codes for the code readers, and the 11-11 reading means no CM codes. I hope you guys can help me interpret what this means and what I need to test or replace. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I would double check how you are reading the codes because all the codes will be two digits or they will all be three digits. Was this an engine off test, or an engine running test?
As EPNCSU2006 said I would recheck the codes.
For your setup there is not a code 12 or 34 and 63 says TP below Min. Voltage and 53 says TP above Max. Voltage.
You can not have both.
OK, I rechecked this and got exactly the same thing. I ground the single wire, sit down and turn on the key with the engine off. I get a flickering flash, then a pause. Then one flash, a short pause and two flashes. Then a short pause, six flashes and a pause, three flashes and a longer pause, then three flashes and pause, four flashes, longer pause, five flashes, pause, three flashes and a longer pause, then nine flashes in a row. I cleared the thing out, and will drive it again and see if the light comes back on and recount.
The site subford referred you to earlier will explain how to interpret the flashes into numbers. We really need the numbers, not the flash-pause version.
The engine was off. I cleared the codes, then drove around about 10 miles and rechecked the codes. I am told to read the numbers by how many times it flashes in a sequence, then when it pauses for a half second to start counting for the next number. The numbers are 12, 63, 34, 53, and 9. This is a 94 Motor home, but might have been built on a 93 or 95 chassis-will that make a difference?
It would be a 1993 E350 and looks like it would have a two number code.
But as I said above and you more than likely have checked at: http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13

The 34 could be EVR but do not think this is a good code with the engine off.
