Which AIR FILTER?

I currently have the napa 6637 air filter on my 2001 PSD. I have the opportunity to get a AFE stage 1 air filter for extremely cheap. Which would should I use on my truck?

From what I have learned on here, I believe you should stay with the 6637. I don't believe you will gain that much over it either, plus it will be alot cheaper to replace in the future. I'm sure you will get more answers from the fine people on here.

I see yalls point. Its just that I've had some trouble lately with the 6637 slipping off and I am constantly worried about it getting wet b/c its a paper filter. Not assuming the price factor - would the afe stage 1 give me a decrease in performance as compared to the 6637? Or they about the same as far as performance?

I just like the idea of having an oiled filter that can be cleaned, not worrying about it getting wet, and not having to worry about it slipping off.

How is the filter held onto the intake pipe? I've got a piece of 4" exhaust tubing connecting the filter to the intake. Hasn't come loose in 2 years. Also, in the 2+ years I've been running the 6637 filter, it has yet to get wet. And, I've been through some pretty nasty rainstorms.

jtharvey, the intake pipe is directly attached over the air filter. After it came loose the first time, I put three screws into the pipe/filter and got a bigger clamp. Thats how its currently riding, hasn't came off yet.

If you had both 6637 and afe stage 1 sitting at the house, which one would you use?

6637 for sure. It flows more air than what our engines can use, and it filters well. I've heard too many reports of the gauze or cotton cleanable filters letting small amounts of dust and dirt through. That's why they flow so well. But, that will also destroy a turbo. Small dust particles can do a lot of damage over time to turbine blades spinning in excess of 100K RPM.

I am with JT I put a piece of 4" exhaust pipe to connect the filter to the intake tube, the fitting it over directly is just asking for trouble IMHO. Maybe it's cheaper but for the couple of bucks spend to do it right vs the cost of a new turbo or engine because it fell off and you didn't notice it before driving down that dirt road it's not worth the savings.
And I would stay with the 6637.

An AFE should be used with a Proguard filter media ONLY,IMHO, from what i've read about their filtering habits.

I'd stay with the 6637 also. You just can't get anything better for the money...IMHO

Alright fellas, yall have me convinced, so I'll stay with the 6637-->yall always seem to know best and have never steered me wrong before. I'll go ahead and get the 4'' exhuast pipe today.

One more thing, it won't put the 6637 filter at risk of getting wet if I do the Zoodad mod to my truck will it?
