If you tow it often enough...it warrants a larger truck because the larger truck will more easily handle the load w/o wearing out parts left and right...
It's not that it can't handle it - it's that it's a lot to do when it's done often.
Besides, you know you're going to want to haul supplies, gear, tools, whatever with you when your out...so you have to consider that as well (not to mention any passangers too).
While an F-150 of this era is a nice strong truck...it's original design intention was light duty work. It was mainly designed for the guy who wants a comfortable ride (softer suspension, etc) to work and hauls/tows some stuff on occasion that warrants owning a truck.
An F-250 or F-350 is ment for the guy who hauls/works/tows often and there are things about it that take away from it's daily driver comfort...
