Smile tailgate replacement

02 F250. I am putting a couple of scooters in the bed. I have removed the tailgate but would like to have a half gate or something 1/2 the height of OEM. The wheelbase of the scooters will fit but the overall length is too long. Any suggestions or recommendations appreciated. Darrell

Sorry, I didn't paint the whole picture. I pull a TT, can't leave the tail gate down. Thanks for the response though.

You could wrap the tailgate support cables over the tailgate latch pins. This leaves the tailgate 1/3 open. (You have to disconnect the cables from the bed to get them around the latch pins on the bed.)

Thank you. I will try that. That just might be enough space without getting into a bind.

...must be a 5th wheel, eh? I bought one of the V style gates, but you still can't leave it full down. Wrapping it so it only goes 1/2 or 1/4 way sounds good to me so long as it's not the wheels (or something low) that keeps you from closing the gate.

The width of truck bed is only like 6 feet, if that. To use as a loading ramp, you'd need it to be at least 10 feet long. But you COULD use it as a "tailgate" after you devised a way to mount it to the truck bed so you wouldn't lose it...and still make it easy to put on and take off.

Just remember you're almost at the angle where the tailgate will want to pop out doing this.

You could put a hose clamp around the open side of the tail gate to keep it from popping off.. That will also slow a potential thief.
