I ran across a 95 Aerostar with the 3.8 today, 146,000,, 2WD, and seemed to run ok. Can anyone give me some advice on these motors, and the whole van. I've never messed with them. It's in great shape in and out, and the price is good.
It may be a 98 or?, and the guy there maybe made a mistake, but it is a 3.8. It has the round front end, not the flat one. I own a 98 explorer, but that's about the only thing from ford I know anything about. I just saw a pic of one searching, and saw the difference, so i edited my origional post.
Thanks

Hello brookwood61 and welcome to the Aerostar forum.
Your reference guy might be a little confused about Aerostar engines. They only had 3.0 or 4.0L engines. Other Fords (Taurus notably) used a 3.8L. 1997 was the last production year for Aerostars. Now, we may be slightly biased around here, but most of us feel strongly about the Aerostar being a reliable, enjoyable and highly versatile vehicle.
As with any used vehicle purchase, satisfaction and long term reliability are dependent upon how well the van has been maintained by previous owner(s). The people around here are among the friendliest and most knowledgeable about Aerostars you will find anywhere.
Thanks aeroc - Yea, they guy was just a helper. It was in a warehouse, about 100 in there, and even hotter on the short test drive(AC don't work). I will have to find out more, when the owner gets back later this afternoon.
(I like my explorer too, after I had the timing cassettes changed)
Thanks again
Sounds like a Windstar...if it is...RUN! I had a 95 W.star...it was junk. Tranny is very prone to failure. I think this is the common opinion on the Windstar around here. Anyone?
I"m not sure but it aeros" doghouse is disighned for 60 dgr v-desighned engine. 3.8 is 90 dgr. Yes, I sow 5.0 v8 aero on e-bay but it requires body modification. Can you pos a photo?
The owner will be out of town till late tonight. It probably was a 95 Windstar, it did have a 3.8, I did check that out. Heck - the kid told me it was a 4 cylinder at first, and he called ia an aerostar also. I never really checked the body name, just the body itself underneath. Definatly not an astro, lol.
Thanks for the tip about the trannys.
I got to check it out a little better today, it is a 95 Windstar Gl with a 3.8. The emblem was off the tailgate, and laying in the back. One thing that I didn't notice the other day, was the clunk in the trans, when you put it in drive. I suppose that could be things other then the tranny, like a rubber bushing on a mount somewhere.
I had to go there today for other reasons, so I took another look at it.
Thanks
first year Winstar, not worth buying unless has had head gaskets done to upgrade for 3.8L and less than 10k miles on NEW FoMoCo tranny. has the infamous A4XN
WOW- and I thought Ford's "Better Idea" Timing Cassettes in the 4.0 SOHC, I have in my 98 Explorer was their clame to fame. Gonna let her read some of those later, and it should get the idea of buying it out of her head.
Thanks for the tips.
the 4.0L SOHC timing chain follower was an easy cheap fix especially if DIY compared to an auto tranny
the A4XN series grenades and takes out the planetary gear sets and torque converter
