what more can i do to make it faster ive put dual flowmasters on it the hypertech chip im now waiting for my tranny to come out of the shop .im having the wide ratio gear set put in it and a 1800 stall converter.i want to be able to spin my tires at take off.also my buddy has a 2000 camero v6 3.8ltr i want to be able to beat him in a race he says once i beat him in a van he will give me his car .lol .any way i have a 302 with efi .thANKS GUYS
If you are serious about building a "fast" van, you'll need to ditch the 302. That's not much engine for that vehicle. A 460 or diesel would be your best bet, and I suspect either of those would require a beefed up front suspension to handle the wieght.
Or of you want to keep the 302, it may be possible to upgrade it. Check the specific engine forum for info on that.
At the very least, I'd make sure to gut everything out of the interior to keep the wieght down.
like 5000 dollars do u think i can get this rebult and pushing 400 500 hp .i want enough speed to beat a 2000 camero v6 3.8 ltr 240 hp .but dont know much hp it would take me to beat him in my a van .thanks
But if you're set on spending $5k on go-fast stuff for your van so you can beat your buddy's camaro, there are definitely ways to do it.
The easiest way to get more power is a bigger engine. A 302 isn't going to cut it. I'm thinking either 351 or 460. With a 460, you'll need a new tranny, but the 351 can use your existing tranny.
Also, you may have to worry about smog issues. Do you need to keep the EFI? Does everything under the hood need to be smog compliant? Answers to those questions will probably dictate where you want to go.
An even better idea may be to buy an old 70's beater truck, the uglier the better, and put a souped up 460 in it. Then it will be even uglier and faster so your buddy will be embarrassed accordingly, and you don't have to mess with your van.
You could buy a $300 Taurus SHO, actually I will give you one with painted racing stripes. ( house paint and a brush.) A new alternator and you should be able to beat him. we took low end corvettes and comaros on the strip. The thing looks like ***** but it really goes. The engine will go into a 89 ford Aerostar and with a supercharger you would be able to beat him no problem in an Aerostar. I don’t know about the e-150. how much hp are you at now. I got a 86 or 7 its my cousins with the same engine. we are pulling the engine but I don’t know if we want to get into changing the engine size (wires and other small things.) Would like to hear what you have and what you are pushing.
Thanks Dan
maby were not talking the same kind of fast .i want light to light fast not top speed just street drag fast quick. short races no going around corners at 150mph.oh u can change the diff ratio how .heres what i want a sporty fast van im getting the wide ratio put in the trans but dont know how much that will help i beat my frends 91 ford explorer 4.0 v6 . my van has a 302 dual flows hypertech pushing around 270 hp thanks guys
The 302 revs hard , have you thought about changing your diff ratio? that would certainly help getting off the mark .
I totally agree. You want the deepest gears you can to give you the most launching power. The 302 can rev pretty high, so that shouldn't be a problem. You need to know what rear axle you have, then get the lowest (numericaly highest) gears you can find.
It's a good thing you aren't going for top speed, since that van has the aerodynamics of a brick.
Sounds like fun anyway. I love the idea of a drag racing van.
You'd be lucky to see 270hp with some of the lower end head, cam, intake setups let alone be impossible for a stock one with an exhaust and chip.
It came with 185 from the factory...add on years of use and wear and you've probably started off with about 160-170hp. You've probably made about 15-20hp so far.
It doesn't take much lol.
This situation is pretty simple with 5000 bucks...
Forget a 460...it would require a tranny swap.
You need a mild 351. In order to make this happen for about $5000...heres what I would do...
Hit up the junkyard, find a complete 351 with any little extra part you think you need (when in doubt take it, lol)...make sure it has good compression and oil pressure (150ish and 20ish hot idle for oil)...then buy it for about $300-$600...
Take it home clean it and disassemble it to the shortblock.
Find some aftermarket heads, maybe the GT-40X heads or world jr's...and get a GT-40 intake with shorty headers and full exhaust system. Need new roller cam with hyd rollers (find a roller block if you can), timing set, pushrods, and rockers. Put in a good air intake and larger throttle body...convert it to MAF and switch the wiring...upgrade the fuel injectors to 24#'rs...get a MAF calibrated to those injectors...and whatever else I can't think of but that about covers it.
This should make a solid 350-400hp (over twice the power you have now) and make about 400+ ft-lb of tq (an extra 130ish ft-lbs). It will also make more torque across the RPM band (flatter curve).
Heads are about $700-$1000 depending on what kind of a deal you get...
This will bring you to about the borderline of what your stock fuel pump will support. You may need an upgrade but I'm pretty sure it will be fine.
Throw in a dyno tuning too.
It takes a lot to make this happen but if it's what you want then go for it and have fun!
