Wheel size for tires??

I know that I should already know this but...I have 37 x 12.50 R 17 LT tires, what size wheel do those fit on? I know they are 17" diameter but what width do I need? 12.50 is a ratio right? so how do you figure wheel width? thanks!

it is L/W/rim diameter

your tire is 37" tall, 12.5" wide, and fits a 17" rim. for a tire that wide i would think a 8 or 9 inch rim would suffice.

metric tire sizes are a bit harder to understand, but i can tell ya if you need.

a 315/75r16 tire is 12.5 inches wide (12.4 to be exact if you do the calculations) and is 34.6" tall.

315 refers to the width of the tread in mm

70 is the ratio of the tread width and the tirewall height

and 17 is the wheel diameter.

So I am able to see that this has a tread width of 315mm = 12.4 inches, and a tire with a width of 12.4 inches can go on a 8 or 9 inch wide rim.

When you start to get into tires that have a tread width of 14.5 inches you should be using a rim with a width of 10 inches.

315 mm * 70% = 220.5 mm = 8.68 inches of tire wall height.

So to get total tire height it is rim diameter plus (2 * tire wall height)

17 + (2 * 8.68) = 34.36 inches

Thanks! I guess I was making too much of it? I thought there was a calculation or something. I appreciate it!

yep, the first number is in millimeters. divide that by 25.4 to convert it to inches.

the second number is a %age of the first number. so, .7*315= 220.5 220.5/25.4= 8.68. this is the amount of sidewall. multiply by two to get two sidewalls, (17.36) and then add the wheel diameter (17) and you have a 34.5" tire.
