As a vetern 12 volt installer (13+ years) I'm going to add my .02.
There is NO best sub.
EVERY sub's performance, regardless of mfgr. and price... is 99% dependant upon a properly designed and constructed enclosure.
Building the appropriate enclosure for specified driver and the desired response is the most important aspect of any subwoofer installation.
The best advice is to LISTEN to a variety of subs, in the same type of vehicle you own if possible, and not in a showroom or demo room. Once you find the sound you want, those are the subs and enclosure type you should seek.
Music is 100% SUBJECTIVE. Ask 100 people how a sub sounds and you'll get almost as many answers.

I'm not saying that there isn't better. It depends on the application that you're going with. But when you're recommending Memphis and Kicker being better, there's no chance. Kicker hits hard, so does Memphis, but they don't have the SQ that JL does. 146 dB isn't that much, I hit 166 with 2 12" MTX's, and that wasn't even pushing the subs anywhere near their limits.
This whole subject can be flamed one way and the other, that's why I'm hardly here anymore because people talk crap about things they don't even know. BTW n_stallr, the enclosure isn't 99% of a subs performance, it's 70% enclosure, 30% sub.

I have Infinity speakers and I know that even the Reference line is pretty good, definitely better than Sony. I don't have any personal experience with Infinity's subs, but I have only heard good things about them. Every once and a while, I will hear something negative about Infinity's subs (like with most any sub), because the person who claims they suck didn't give them enough power or did something wrong.
